Trim and Paint Code Question

Trim and Paint Code Question
Anyone know of a way to figure out the original trim and paint codes using the VIN or some other means besides looking at the placard on the door?
My dad owned the car before me, and he had an accident with a deer that damaged the driver's door. Apparently, the insurance company used a facility that replaced the original 98 XJ8 L damaged door with one from a 2000 model. The paint code on the current 2000 door is PED. My car is black so I assume PDX would be the original code. If I'm not mistaken PDX and PED are the same.
However, i don't know if the SDZ Cashmere is the correct trim now. I would like to know what the right one is for future trim repairs. Any ideas?
Thanks

Hi,
Faced with a similar problem recently (last owner had polished the VIN plate fixed to panel above radiator and, in so doing, rubbed out the paint and trim codes). I don't know whether cars destined for other countries have a VIN plate fixed there as well ??
Anyway, if you are able to insert your hand up inside the centre console on the right-hand side, just a bit back from a point level with the radio housing you may be able to feel a sheet of flimsy paper (its stapled to the inside of the centre console) Carefully remove same and you will that it contains the original build details (at least for the trim colour etc).
With regards the paint codes - yes, I believe you are correct PDX and PED are one and the same.

I am not sure where the build sheet location that you describe at "inside the centre console on the right-hand side".
Here is the central console parts diagram on Jaguar classic parts website:
Where do you put your hand (up at the front end of it on the right side next to the radio, or in the middle before the console storage area or ??).
I tried (with without much luck) to get my hand into the very front right side on the central console.
I sure would like to view it.

Hello again Jim,
Roughly, just below where item No 5 is shown on diagram (that area of the centre console where it meets the carpet, vertically from the drivers footwell - or passenger footwell in Left-hand drive cars. The side of the console consists of a lower panel about 4" deep - if you put your hand behind that panel and slide it upwards you should feel the sheet of paper attached to the inside of the console (that was the case on my 2002 model - I've also got a used console in the garage from an earlier car and that also had the sheet attached). Good luck.
