Default Trunk Gas Struts

One strut failed on 04 XJ8 - I plan to replace both. Are the after market struts offered on discount parts sites worthwhile? Or should I stay with OEM type. Do the C like metal clips at strut ends need a particular tool?

Can not give an opinion on the strut quality but just use a small flat blade screw driver, no need to remove the whole clip just lift it a little bit and that will be enough to release it

I did mine last week while the trunk was empty.
It really helps if all the lining & wheel is out, as it gives just that extra needed space.

It also helps if you can sit in the trunk.
It is tight, but much easier as some other threads suggest.
The small screwdriver is a must, small hands help .

In my case there were tie-raps on the struts holding cables, be careful before you pull them out.

Oh yeah, have an extra pair of hands ready to hold the lid, it is quite heavy once the strut is gone, even if you do them one by one ....

Appreciate the replies - I can see myself hitting the paint with the screw driver or strut - sounds pretty easy - the tip on having someone hold the trunk is something I would be swearing about - although likely would of propped with wood 2 x 4 -

While you're at it, might consider this mod

EDIT:
Oh, right, wrong tab -> wrong sub-forum. Oh well, if I sell the X in the summer and find an X308, I'm going to try adding such springs to the struts of that too anyway.
