trunk release problem

Does the trunk open with the key? If yes and you can see the lights not working then you have a couple of broken wires.
Facing the trunk the right hand hinge has a bundle of wires that are routed in the hinge arm. Remove the plastic covering and and un-tape the bundle. The break may not be ready apparent the wire with a multi meter as far apart as you can get then flex the wire and watch the continuity.
The wires breaking in the hinge is a fairly common problem.
