Turn off engine sounds like the fan running
......the last couple days when I turn off engine it sounds like a fan motor starts running. I live in So Fla and car has been her since day 1 / it's not even our hot summer days. Never had it come on b4 .What is it, and why is it running / what is my best avenue of approach and most economical way to resolve (unfortunately I live in a condo no tools and no mechanical experience). I really enjoy this car and any suggestions on how to maintain and upkeep it w/o taking a second mortgage are appreciated!...............thanks

You probably need to buy an OBDII reader from a local auto parts store. Get one that will read water temperature, MAF pressure, short and long term fuel trims (maybe about $100). Plug it in, work through the set up until you get to the setting where you can follow water temp real time. Leave it plugged in while you drive the car. The seller can show you where to plug it in under the right side of the steering cowling below the ignition key and above the accelerator (at least Advance Auto Parts, O'Reilly, Napa stores will).
Your Thermostat begins to open around 183*F, should be full open at 195* and the fans should come on somewhere around 208* or so (remember, pure water boils at 212*, pressurization raises it higher, and coolant even higher yet). on mine, the system wants to keep it under 205* in the Summer or while idling in traffic and turns the fans on (first one, then if necessary, both).
As an aside, the fans come on when the A/C is on.
Your system is telling you that the temperature in the cooling system is high enough to keep fans on after you shut down in order to dissipate the excess heat.
So the question is: is this normal, or are you overheating? You need the data to answer the question. If it is overheating, you need to take it to good shop to solve that issue.
With an XJR, heat builds from the supercharger as well (but I have no knowledge).
Hope this helps and doesn't sound condescending if you knew all this.

I would get the thermostat and water pump checked out. When this happened to mine, I had to have a new thermostat fitted. If that needs to be done, it's also best to replace the original plastic thermostat housing with a metal one if it hasn't been done. The plastic ones embrittle and crack with age.

I have the same symptom, don't know if it's the same problem. I paid the dealer $250 to tell me one of the fan motors is bust and I need a new fan unit. For $1000 from the dealer after discount. I have a Jaguar X308 XJR 2000 MY with 160,000 km, original fan unit.
I will try and solve the problem with a used fan motor, have ordered 2 for about $30. Hope one of them is good enough for a while.
Mostly the fan runs on after turning motor off when using a/c, it's hot outside, and in city stop start traffic. First noticed the problem when stuck in traffic queue a long time with outside temperature 40+ C (I think about 110 F) and a/c cooling became ineffective.
I'm living on borrowed time I know with only one fan motor working but avoiding car use while waiting for fans to arrive.
Have just learnt this week from reading this forum that the temperature gauge should be considered a warning light rather than gauge. Something like if it goes over halfway then you have seconds to turn off motor before it's cooked.

There are a couple of versions of the water pump too, try to get the newest one you can, with the proper metal gasket, rather than paper

The fan SHOULD have been coming on before in warm weather and lots of traffic. It is normal to run after the car is shut down. It would be good to check the actual temps with an obd II reader though. The engine will quickly destroy itself if overheated. Real
gauge will give you better water temp info as well.
RealGauge FAQ - TheJagWrangler
Treat the FIRST indication of overheat as if you had NO oil pressure. Shut it down and
get it towed.

success....replaced thermostat and engine coolant sensor and no fan over run on engine shut down. This also proven to me you can get OE parts on eBay if you research item listing with factory specs......u save 60-70% and if item listed on eBay isnt what it says ebay guarantees purchase refund.............not an ad 4 eBay just an fyi!
