I used a small speaker that I had in my workshop to test the module - once I determined that it was the speaker I went to radio shack and picked up one that would fit in the small space. I was not able to get the exact ohm speaker -- but I got one that was close and it worked for the few more years I had the car.
RS sells small speakers with the wires already attached -- so you can do a simple splice if you are unable to use solder.

If you have an ohm meter, you can see if there is any continuity.
or
us an AA or other 1.5V battery and a couple of wires and try applying 1.5V momentarily to the speaker. Touch on to speaker terminals and off. Each time you connect momentarily, the speaker should click. I pretty sure it will not.
RS did not have a great selection when I needed one 2 months back, but did have a 1" plastic cone speaker. Collected it in and used a couple of cable ties and it has been fine.

Actually I think the 8Ohm is louder than the original, but agree that an older headset unit would work well.

If the fine copper wire in the voice coil of the speaker has a break in it then when cold, as the copper contracts, the broken ends move apart from each other. When it warms up and the copper expands, the broken ends move towards each other, eventually touching.
Just about any replacement speaker will work... if it is too loud, just add a resistor in series - try one that's about 4-6 times the speaker impedence to start. If the new speaker is 8 Ohms, add a 30 to 50 Ohm resistor between one speaker lead and the speaker terminal. These are also cheap at Radio Shack. A 1/8 or 1/4 Watt resistor will suffice.
Instead, a small 100 Ohm potentiometer (also from Radio Shack) in series might be ideal - this way you can reduce the volume to your liking by turning the potentiometer shaft.
