Default tyre questions!!

g'day one and all. can anyone enlighten me on the use of non jaguar fitment tyres. my car is a 2000 xj8 3.2 executive with 225/55/16 wheels. the wheels i believe are called starburst (5 spokes). the owners handbook states that non jag fitment tyres can be used but they must be run at 44psi. if anyone has had any experience good or bad then any information would be gratefully recieved. thanks in advance for any replies.

I can't imagine that the 44psi is accurate. Maybe there is a misprint, or they are talking about the space saver spare tire. There is no shortage of good aftermarket tires for your car that would be in the 30 psi range. I would call the dealer and ask them if there is a problem with the handbook.....

That's what the handbook says!
I followed these guidelines with the Yokohamas until I noticed that the tires were wearing only in the middle.

Now down to 32/34 and much better ride, handling as before and even wear again.

hi there, thanks for the replies.
the handbook does state 44psi (which seems too high to me also) for non jag fitment tyres and 60psi for the space saver spare tyre.
does anyone know what's the difference between jaguar fitment tyres and non jaguar fitment tyres?
i've been told that the bead on jag/fitment tyres is deeper than normal tyres, is that true? if it is, is there not a chance that a non jag/fitment tyre would roll of the rims?
any comments on good choices/experiences with non jag/fitment tyres (makes, models, etc) would be much appreciated.

The "Jag fitment" tyres are a contractual affair between Jaguar and their original equipment supplier. No, other tyres won't 'roll off the rims.' Utter nonsense.
The pressure recommendations for the "Jag Fitment" tyres are perfectly appropriate for other brands of tyre. The 44psi figure is likely either a subtle way of pressuring (pun intended) us to stick with Jag's contractual buddies, or it is written by lawyers. In any event it is absurd, and will result in premature wear of the center of the tread and a rough ride, as stated above. "Space saver" spare tyres do require 60psi, as they are of an entirely different nature, but my Jaguar has a full-size spare (I thought all XJs do?), and should carry the same pressure as the other four tyres.
There are numerous threads on this site and on www.jag-lovers.org about the various merits of different brands of tyres. A nice overview of brands available can be had at www.tirerack.com. Just be sure that whatever you decide on is of the proper size and speed rating.
Cheers!
