Default under the skin of the instrument panel pad

Does anyone know what lies under the outer surface of the crash pad along the top of the instrument panel in the center above the clock and center vents?

In other words, if I cut through it ... what will I be cutting through? Where is the steel? What interference will I run into?

from JTIS:

The one-piece slush-moulded fascia has an injection-moulded armature and incorporates a steel transverse reinforcing rail. Fascia side support brackets pre-set to the BIW, determine fascia fore and aft, and height positions and a bush installed in a BIW bracket centrally positioned on the upper fascia panel, similarly determines the correct transverse location of a fascia dowel.

Just checked today, it's plastic, but there it's also the housing of the central vents, fixed to the top of the dash with two nuts, I had no time to take them off. The metal sheet is from the middle of the dash, where the colors are separating if your dash is 2 colors , to the centre console and the sides.

So the top surface above the vents sounds like it is all plastic or foam materials.

Time to get out the hot knife then.

Like you I have a hankering for gauges. In this case, voltmeter, boost and oil pressure.

Plus an over temperature alarm wired from the alarm output of one of these:

AutoSpeed - $25 Temperature Controller and Display!

The unit itself will be placed in the cubby hole by the driver's left knee.
