Unlocking car with key

I would like to learn about locking and unlocking my 98 XJR with the key or valet key. The fob works fine, I'm just trying to understand how the key itself controls the locks and windows, and haven't found much online about it.
Here are my observations and questions:
If I get out of the car and press the lock knob down prior to closing the door, it locks all four doors but then immediately unlocks them automatically. Is this normal? I assume it's so you don't accidentally lock your key in the car?
If I close the door and turn the lock with the key, it locks all four doors. I assume this is the correct way to lock the car if not using the fob? Such as a valet?
When I unlock the door with the key, it unlocks all four doors, but if I'm not careful it rolls down all four windows too. I think this is normal, but why does it do that? How is it supposed to work? It seems to roll the windows down if I keep the key turned a bit too long while unlocking the door.
If I lock the door with the key, I can hold the key in a rotated position and it will roll up the windows. I assume this is normal?
Feel free to elaborate or correct any of my observations. Again, I'm just trying to understand how it is supposed to work. It may be that my car is working exactly as designed, but I just want to know for sure. Thank you!

You have to hold the key for a while before the windows roll down. The same when locking and rolling them up again.
To unlock you just need to flip the key and done. Don't hold it.
And do not unlock the trunk with a key if the car is locked. The alarm will go off instantly as soon as the trunk lid is opened!
