VVT sprocket installation

I'm putting back together my 1999 XJ8 after replacing the timing chains and tensioners and I'm wondering if I need to hold the VVT toward one side or the other as I torque down the bolt securing it to the camshaft. In the 308 workshop manual there is no mention of positioning the VVT as it is tightened. I have a special tool that came in the timing lockdown kit that has two little pins that would allow me to position the inside of the VVT mechanism as I tighten down the sprocket, but again there is no mention of this tool in the workshop manual.
Thank you!
Thank you!

I believe you hold the sprocket fully counter clock-wise (retarded position), if I remember correctly. I did it about a year ago, but I really think that's what I did.
I feel certain that info is in one of the timing chain threads on here. That's probably where I got the info in the first place. I think some folks claim it's not necessary to hold it in position, but the directions I followed included that step.
Here is a fairly recent thread that addresses the question:

While torquing the passenger side intake camshaft sprocket holding bolt it cracked at around 100 Nm of torque never reaching the recommended ~120 Nm. I was able to remove the bolt in one piece, but it has a spiral fracture between the threads. This is the bolt that is bored through the center for returning the oil from the VVT. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Is that the bolt that goes through the VVT sprocket? Is your VIN ending in 853935 or lower? Is it about 63mm long?
If all of the above is "yes", then I think the following is the bolt. Obviously you would need to investigate more thoroughly before purchasing.

This is the only other one I see... (38 mm)

You could call them in the morning with your vehicle information and perhaps they could confirm which bolt you need for your car. I know several of the Jaguar forums sponsors will do that for you.
