washer pump control problem
Hi All,
I'm New to the site but like what i see so far.--My apologies in advance for the long winded natue of this post.
I have 2000 XJ8--bought it 2 yrs ago w/ 27K mi. on it---it's my first Jag & i'm Loving it.
I am having an issue with my washer pump--when I press the wiper control/washer button in to spray... nothing happens...In fact the button goes in but doesn't push back out---is there supposed to be a spring in there?
I know the pump works fine because I removed the button and completed the circuit with a small screwdriver and the pump worked just fine.
the strange thing about this is that I KNOW FOR A FACT that the washer pump control used to work. the only thing I can think of is that the company that detailed the car removed the control button and lost (or disposed of) the spring---The reason I suspect this is because... I do all of my own service & (since I've owned it) the car has never been to a shop ---however when I got the car back from the detailer there were all kinds of strange things happening with the electrical system---clock was spinning nonstop--radio kept switching between modes (am/fm/phone/mute etc) and other electrical control functions seemed strange--all of the above ceased within a day and I attributed it possibly some kind of cleaning solution (or moisture from carpet cleaning) that they may have sprayed on the dash shorting out some of the controls..
(Never going back to that detailer again!)
In any event...I need to know if there is supposed to be a spring in that push button control and if anyone has a detailed diagram of the wiper/washer control arm assembly.
Any isea if I can get just a spring?
Thanks In advance

update
So it dawned on me that there is a very similar control on the opposite side of the seering wheel...a quick prey of the button revealed a small rubber boot with a contact inlaid in the boot ---giving the button both its "springy" feel and conductive properties....
Obviously, the detail company removed the rubber boot contact when detailing the vehicle.
I am going over there right now to get up in their grill and see if those yo/yo's still have the rubber contact boot someplace---though I am sure they will deny any involvment or wrong doing.
Will let you know how it goes.

Why they felt the need to remove the button in the first place is beyond me, but if they don't have the boot there could be other options. These cars were from the Ford Era, and various parts have Ford badges on them, so other Ford Models may be able to donate a bit for your arm.
If not, you could do the old fashioned thing and adapt. It won't be seen by others so you mught be able to find a piece of rubber of a similar size and fit it.
