Default Water pump o-ring?

Just got a new Jag water pump for the 2000 XJ8.
It comes with a thin metal gasket.
It looks different from other, thicker gaskets on the internet with built in rubber seals.
The manual mentions renewing a pump o-ring.
Is this necessary for this version of the pump?

Thanks again,

Dan

the metal gasket is correct, just make sure the mating surfaces are spotless, for added peace of mind a smear of hylomar or similar sealant could be used, we are talking a tiny amount here.

Thanks. There is an ring indentation on the new metal gasket which I suppose takes the place of the old o-ring. I will use Permatex water pump gasket sealant for peace of mind.

Bought some Hylomar this morning. Looks like the real McCoy.

Where did you order the Hylomar?

Sorry about bringing an old thread back from the dead I figured it would be better if I just added my question on to this one, rather than start a new thread. When you (Sean B) say that a smear of sealant would be fine, what area are you referring to? Around the central portion, or around the central portion and the openings on each side? I ask, because the new water pump that I bought has a metal gasket, and no o-ring. I plan to go pick up some of the Permatex sealant tomorrow, so I can get my car put back together. But I want to make sure that I don't over-apply it, or put it somewhere where it shouldn't go. Thank you

You apply a very thin coating to the entire gasket mating face both sides of the gasket.
