Can anyone tell me what years had the plastic water pump impeller? Did the factory correct the plastic impeller issue??

Default Water Pump upgrade

I have not been able to find definitive info on when the water pumps were changed
to have metal impellers, but I do know my 2001 had a plastic water pump impeller
before I replaced it. I think a 2002 would be safe, but no guaruntee. It's not a
difficult job to replace it though, especially if you're changing your coolant and
t-stat anyway.

When do you recommend a transmission fluid change/flush? I am planning on letting the dealer do that one... you agree?

the problem with that is the cost of the fluid, it makes for a $500 flush. But is still needed, you may want to ask about coupons or research atlernatives. But a 26k I wouldnt even think about till 60k and Ide do a drain and check the fluid for smell and color, I f dark and smelly then flush, otherwise refill

Autobox fluid service is not hard...buy filtre/gasket and Merc fluid on ebay...$70.00 for a kit and 4 quarts of OEM fluid for the 722.6 box...Merc part number is 001 989 21 03 10. I bought from ebay vendor ....current auction is # 230338156145....no affiliation.

I had to do plenty of research...but this is the right fluid...NO substitutes are permissible and if you use something else, or even another type of Merc fluid, you WILL risk tranny failure. Draining the box, dropping the pan etc swopped out almost exactly 4 quarts on my 02 XJR. I plan to do another fluid drop and replace at the next oil change...without dropping the pan, you'll drain about 3 quarts only...the drain plug is NOT right at the base of the pan...about 1 quart remains in the bottom. removal of the pan is messy and being clean is imperative.

Hi Brutal,
Can you send me the procedure for a proper filter and fluid change? Any special requirements for re-filling?

Default trans fluid fill

Raise the vehicle for access.
Carefully remove the drain plug and drain the transmission fluid.
Refit the drain plug and tighten to the specified torque figure. (27nm) Use a new 0-ring.

INSTALLATION

Remove the fluid level / filler plug.
Using a syringe dedicated to transmission fluid only (not used for any other type of oil or fluids), inject transmission fluid until it overflows from the plug orifice. Fit, but do not tighten the plug.

Prepare PDU (at the base station).
Install the appropriate disk and switch ON.
Select the vehicle specification - ENTER.
From Engineering Tools select Toolbox - ENTER.
From Toolbox select Powertrain - ENTER.
Connect MPA and download cable to PDU and base station.
Select Data logger - ENTER.
Select Transmission - ENTER.
Disconnect download cable.
Connect MPA to PDU.
Connect PDU (at the vehicle).
Connect MPA cable to the vehicle diagnostic socket - ENTER.
Energize the vehicle ignition - ENTER.
From the menu select Transmission oil temperature (TOT) - ENTER.
Check that the fluid temperature is <30°C .
From above.
NOTE: Ensure that the TCM is connected and functioning correctly. Select Park and start the engine.

Cycle the gear selector.
From P to D.
From D to R.
From R to P.
From below.

Next adjust the transmission fluid level by the following steps:

Remove the filler / level plug. Inject fluid until it overflows from the plug orifice. CAUTION: The fluid temperature MUST NOT exceed 50°C . Wait for the flow of fluid to reduce to a trickle (for at least 1 minute).Refit the filler / level plug and tighten to the specified torque figure. (32nm) Check for leaks and remove spilt fluid.
Shut down and disconnect PDU.

Thanks Wazari,
I was good until you got to the section that I am guessing requires a computer, what is a PDU and where do I get one?? Is it cost effective in purschasing computer vs just letting the dealer perform the task? Appreciate the time you took to write up the how-to guide.

A PDU is Jaguar's portable diagnostic unit. A good scan tool that can measure trans oil temp via TCM will do. How cost effective it is depends on how often you're going to use it. I personally would get a PC based software program that supports CAN if I were going to buy a diagnostics tool. I think Autoenginuity's software is about $250 US.

A dealer performing the task is one solution. Having run a service dept at a dealership, the downfall is the cost of the fluid a Jag dealer will charge you. You can find the same Esso fluid at other sources for less money, including VW/Audi stores. If you can find a good independent Jag shop that will use the right fluid, that maybe another option.
