I ordered the same pump from Rock Auto and my pump has the black impellers. So what is this the old style that was known to fail? Also, with the Airtex pump did you guys use the rubber o-ring like the factory or just used the paper gasket that came with the pump? It seems the the Airtex is 59mm round and the factory pump 55mm round that goes in the engine block.

Whilst the paper gasket supplied with the airtex pump is adequate we would always suggest purchasing a genuine AJ88922 gasket. PPS Reinforced 40% (pps-gf40).

You can go that route but in all honesty, the paper gasket will be fine
if you use a light smear on both sides with Dow Corning Silastic Gasket Maker
or it's equivelant......light smear being the opreative words ;o]

Just an update,

Been chasing a leak for the past couple of months, having to add coolant every so often(about a 1 cup or so) and seeing it drip about where it would come from the water pump.

Figured it can't be that since I just replaced it.

Wrong. I could not see anything from the seep hole, have been checking and replacing hoses...but of all things it was coming from the freeze plug. I couldn't see it unit I removed the belt and pulley and got a mirror to see underneath.

Oh well, at least its an easy job.

Hello Chris...that's an unusual place for these to leak....how many miles you covered amd what type of coolant has been used?
Have you noticed much corrosion to the internal alloy passages when you replaced the pump?

That's what I thought! I have put maybe 5k miles on her since I replaced the water pump. I use and have used only the orange coolant, I buy from Ford as it's about 1/5 of the price compared to buying it from Jaguar. No corrosion was evident. It looked like brand new when I pulled it apart.

i just received an Airtex pump from Amazon. It has the metal impeller, not the white plastic. Wondering if I should send it back and try to find the white plastic one, maybe from the Ford dealer.

(BTW, the one I received is made in China as I guess they all are these days).

Is that a cast or stamped impeller? The comments on the forums suggest the cast impellers are superior.

Not sure how I could tell if stamped or cast. The reason I bought the Airtex is that most people seem to recommend the white plastic impeller over the metal ones found on most of the cheap Chinese units. Everyone agrees that black plastic is the worst of the bunch.

It will do fine.....there is sooooo much horse sh*t floating about these pumps
ad neaseum.....whether they be white plastic or cast metal (which is in yours)
The big issue is the type of coolant used and how long it's let go before change.
Practically every problem encounted with these pumps is down to lack of maintanance or cheap and nasty coolants.

I agree that the metal impeller would probably be fine although I have read that the OAT coolant does not have the anti-cavitation agents needed for metal impellers.

In any event, I already sent back the Airtex and ordered an AC-Delco to replace it. Even if they both use metal impeller (I am not sure until it arrives), the Delco unit comes with factory type gasket and the rubber o-ring whilst the Airtex just has paper gasket.

See the results of my AC-Delco unit. Look it over before installing it. There was a reason Jaguar changed designs(I don't know why but they did )

I received the Ac-Delco unit today. Made in USA, and did not have the blocked port defect that Chris experienced. It did come with the metal gasket and the rubber o-ring. The impeller is indeed metal but is definitely cast unlike the airtex which is pressed steel. Looks to be better made for whatever that is worth. I will certainly wind up installing this unit. Photo attached.

FWIW.....I just picked up a Jaguar pump and gasket from Jaguar Merriam Parts for like $90 shipped. It is probably double what I could have spent on another brand but I figured at under $100 it was worth it to me.

Do post some pics or at least a description. Did it indicate country of manufacture / assembly.

Many members seem to indicate that the Airtex with the white plastic impeller is the same unit that Jaguar currently sells through the dealer. Others have indicated that the AC-Delco is an exact match to the pump they removed from the vehicle.

Odds are prety good that Jaguar does not manufacture these but is reselling a part made by someone else.

I will do so as soon as I receive it. I'd be interested as well, he said it was the latest generation pump so we shall see.

Here is the Jaguar water pump next to the GMB water pump. The OEM pump is manufactured in the UK and is the latest generation. Overall they look very similar with the exception of the impeller. I can definitely see how the white impeller would be more efficient. Construction is similar but weight difference is noticeable with the OEM being much lighter. The jag part also seems to turn more freely. Don't know what else I can cover. Will install it and see how reliable it is!!

I got the same waterpump from AC DELCO.

I am not sure if yours did the same thing, but when I hand turned the propeller it was sort of stiff.

This is one of the ports. the other side is the same way. I think you do need to return yours. I am tempted to kind of grind that rounded spot out. seems to be part of casting mode when made.
