when we developed the AJ37 Aston engine we found that thicker 10W-60 Castro and other oils maintained a better oil film thickness under heavy track use.

The aston is more likely to be used on the track and uses a dry dump system. Even so, during development I saw X100s and X308s I saw some engines fail due to windage/heavy G cornering. This is why the oil capacity is apparently increased in 2000 model year for the XJ- what was done was the dip stick was changed oil amount increased. I don't know if I'll track my car, may be a bit and with modern tyres the way they are- I thought the 5W-50 would help a little. Down side is that you'll lose fuel efficiency and some power by going to a thicker oil.

The one transmission shop familiar w/ the ZF is so busy I'm on a wait list. Meanwhile my state inspection is due Sept. 30th I hope to have this sorted out by then. The shop's a small operation so I just don't know. Would be a mess my inspection lapses while waiting, then I'd have to surrender tags etc. I think before that happens I'd risk driving it the 1000 yards to the inspection station as there are no faults/codes registering currently lol.

Not the car, but its driver broke down 2 weeks ago.

So I covered her up, as a broken shoulder and torn tissues will keep me grounded for some time to come .
Luckily I just did her 1/2 year inspection.

Any specialists on shoulders here??

I thought you'd been quiet Eric, I hope you get better soon. My pal has hurt his shoulder and it's limiting what he can do, so I sort of know how you are feeling. Good thing about the x308 is they can be driven one handed quite easily.

Sorry to hear about the injury Eric it's no joke, dislocated mine when I took part in something of a sporting run along the streets of Pamplona many years ago, and it's still knackered! Got a great picture though. The red cross fixed me up that time!

As per thread title, scolded mine for a potential speeding ticket today - so damn easy to roll over 50mph in these things.

That's why I love Germany. Speeding? Doesn't matter. The fines are so small, you happily pay them! Not kidding! 20 kph over the limit and you don't lose your license. You only pay something like 25 EUR or 40. Nowt if you look at what you've done. The Germans call that an 'Ordnungswidrigkeit', which basically means 'disobeying the rules', not the law funny people, these Germans.

I guess is Germany the Police are not subsidized by fines! They generate large sums from motorists in the UK to fund more traffic cameras with vehicle recognition. Once long quiet roads were safe to motor along are now equipped with these 'cash cows'. As a UK motorist I feel it's yet another way of extracting money from drivers. I must admit I'm an 'assertive' driver, see a gap I'm there!

There are some Police checks. Mostly via lasering. But then again, they aren't expensibe either. Most tickets come from private companies checking for the county... Otherwise it is cheap.

The idea behind cheap fines is simple: if it is cheap, you will accept them and simply pay. Result: higher income for the local council resulting in a better service for the community.

If the fines rise, people will think twice about doing it. Clever thinking, right?

I would tolerate the UK police's big brother style of speed enforcement if they bothered to police the rest of people's driving, not just the speeding. But instead they go along in their panda cars ignoring illegally parked vehicles causing obstructions and creating hazards, on the lookout for someone who may be doing 32 in a 30 zone. They're also more than happy to ignore someone's clearly bad driving or dangerous vehicle in favour of looking for someone speeding. What you see on TV is not what happens in real life.

My own X308 activities have taken a back seat as I've been mainly focused on fixing my Triumph and getting her back on the road. Yesterday I took the Triumph for MOT and she passed, this is after dropping the diff out and fitting new seals, new water pump, new fan belt, new starter motor, new overdrive solenoid and custom made carburettor heat shields fitted. So now all three vehicles are in roadworthy condition, though good it means I don't have any excuse for not being able to get somewhere lol

My NC driving license are technically suspended for an accumulation of points. But I've had no problem @ stops/road blocks flashing my Georgia license lol.

Also Eric I had a torn rotator cuff & labrum years ago , it was rough going early on, but w/ proper rehab I've had zero issues since.

I've been driving my 308 daily since Friday because I've been off work and I've been doing a couple of longer trips to places. I love driving this car, it's so nice to be the only one of your kind in a crowd. It's rare to get two X308s next to each other outside of a show in the UK these days.

However yesterday the CEL came on, and checking the codes gave me P1647 Heated oxygen sensor (H02S) 1 (upstream), bank 2 – control malfunction

So it looks like I've got new 02 sensors on the horizon, which is very annoying. Annoying because when I broke up my old one I sold the Catalytic Converters to someone with the sensors left in, but he just wanted the precious metals within. Sean B said that'd come back to haunt me LOL

A chance to adress some niggles they car's had since I bought it and had put off.

i. the battered n/s mirror cover was disguised with a nice shiny new one, I thought doing the o/s one at the same side made sense as they were £25 a pair.

ii. the wooden gear knob had a crack in it so a leather one, to match the interior, was sourced and fitted, another £15.

Hi Milowokie,
Covers look good and they are great value for money considering the chrome or stainless ones can be £65 for a S/H one and then more for new,but take good care of them they scratch quite easily as I've found out the hard way,just touching the hedgerow's slightly was enough so I take another route now.
Car looks nice my friend.

They just stick on over your existing covers with 3M tape.

For that price I'll treat them as sacrificial.

The cheapest OEM replacement, not stick over, covers were £200....

Still awaiting an opening @ my transmission shop. Time is of the essence as my state vehicle inspection is due by Sept. 30th if I don't have it done by then I will have to re-register & re-tag my car. I'm hoping to get in there this week, as I'm leaving for Las Vegas on Thursday to view a boxing event. My LV weekend trips tend to turn into multiple day to weeks escapades lol. I'd like for my car to be in the shop if/when that occurs.

The car is not showing any faults or storing any codes(I haven't driven it since the P1722/Gear Box Fault event), so I ask what would happen if I drove the car maybe 500 yards to the inspection station(here they just check tires,lights,horn,wipers, glass etc.) what would that risk me or is it not even worth it, thanks.

I swapped it for a Honda CRV. Don't have to worry about CEL's or other errors that appear when nothing is wrong. The LWB Jag Sovereign was the best looking car on the planet in unmarked shiny silver grey with unscratched alloy wheels and a nice quiet engine that was just waiting to stab me in the back without any warning. The Honda ? Functional, boring but as reliable as night and day. 8 years of Jag ownership has persuaded me never to buy another one. Auf Wiedersehen.

Default Dash Cam

Started hard wiring a front & rear dash cam to my '2002' S type R, a couple of days ago. Got distracted by family and left car with wires hanging everywhere. Good job I didn't need to use it!
Anyway, just about to get back to it on this sunny Bank Holiday Monday (UK) Hopefully the will be pretty and running again soon:-)
