Finally fixed the wing mirror glass properly.
Found out that the previous owner had used blu tac, which had lasted for years but then finally started falling off recently.
I found that fitting the plastic firstly to the wing mirror, then fitting the whole assembly to the housing worked.

Started getting a "hot oil" smell when I turned the car off. Couldn't figure out where it was coming from for a while, but then noticed a slight oil weep at the passenger side VVT oil seal.
These are very easy to replace, just have to disconnect the VVT electrical connector, then put a screwdriver under the strong outside rim of the seal and pry the seal out. To fit the new one simply clean the area, lubricate the new seal, and then press it into place, finally securing it with light taps with either a punch or correct sized socket.

I don't think anyone is really sure, I believe that Jaguar had one or maybe two interim upgrades before the final all metal tensioners, I think the first upgrade was in August 2001, and not sure but I don't think the final MKIII all metal type was installed until 2003...............but hazy on it all.

Replaced the rest of my spark plug boots as preventative maintenance. No noticeable changes in performance, no surprises there.
Got my defective tire warrantied, new tire went on, vibration again improved slightly but still outside of what I'd consider acceptable. This is gonna drive me crazy til I get it fixed...
Also dug around in some random Jag tech docs courtesy of jagrepair.com, discovered the XJR transmission has two reverse gears! The gear used is determined by sport mode status.

It is perfect for casual use to keep the dust off if you have spent several hours washing, clay-barring and waxing the car, but don't intend to drive it for a few days, and at $30 bucks you really can't go wrong.
It is light material, has a soft interior, is easy to put on and take off, and the colored striping on the door mirrors help with orientation, as well as reflective quality if you did ever use it outside etc.....and it is touted as waterproof.
Mine is a VDP and so it is a snug, but comfortable fit. I am pleased with it, it is excellent value and is perfect for what I want it for.

It indeed really helps a lot against dust and other stuff (the things I am battling with as I hardly drive these babies ).

Not sure that this really belongs here, it sort of does and sort of doesn't because it's not really about "what I did to my X308 today".............but my wife and I had to take a 1,500 mile round trip to Los Angeles last week. I didn't want to take the Jag as I didn't want to rack up the miles on the clock, we could have taken my wife's Honda CRV, but car rental is just so cheap we rented a 2020 Toyota Camry SE from Enterprise for less than $40 a day!
I thought that I would be impressed with a 2020 car............ but.................the seats were way too hard, the "A' pillar slopes back so steeply that you hit your head on it every time you get in or out of the car, there is a side bolster on the driver seat that makes your leg ache after a few miles, and it also makes getting out of the car difficult, especially coupled with the wide rocker sill that hits you in the back of your calf every time you get in or out of the car. The doors open so wide that you cannot reach them to close them when you are in the car, and of course if you do stretch out to close them you immediately hit your head on the "A" pillar.....again! The cruise control buttons take some figuring out, even after reading the handbook, it took me over 800 miles before I eventually figured out the sequence of events that made them work properly........maybe it was their conjunction with the vehicle detection and the lane detection software, .............or maybe I'm a little slow? The suspension was reasonable soft, but the low profile, run-flat tires took care of that! The ride was hard and noisy at anything below 40 mph, but did smooth out at anything over 70mph. The 8-speed automatic transmission is cool, but very noisy/whiney at low speeds. The touch screen display seems a little complex and over-kill for such normal, simple functions. But, I did like the lane control and vehicle detection software coupled with the cruise control, it was perfect for long trips, and, the car had a decent sized trunk, and it did return 33.2 mpg.
But, the whole point of this post...........it was OH SO NICE to come home and get in the 19 year old Jag! ........smooth, quiet comfortable luxury!
