3/4 I gather it was kind of a spontaneous thing, wide open freeway 4 am. Been using sport mode a lot here lately.

Need some help from the x308 family.
I have a 98 XJR with CATS suspension which needs to be replaced. Due to the cost of CATS shocks, and after some positive feedback from some forum members, I'm decided to go for Bilstein Sport shocks (not cats). I will replace all rubber bushes as well. My question is: should I also replace the upper mounts or can I keep the existing. They seem to be quite expensive... Thanks in advance.

Sorry to pile another question on this thread, but what's the difference (in design and operation) between CATS and non-CATS shocks?
Thank you.

Cheers,

I didn't think the electronic CATS suspension was available until 2000-2001 models and then came standard on the 2002+ XJR's. I'm sure you know you have it, but are there wires running to the shocks on each corner?

Cheers,
The CATS shock absorbers adjust between hard and soft settings electronically based on imput from accelerometers and yaw sensors

So, they have an electronic module integral to the shocks, I gather. More complexity and (like the wife always says) more potential for something to go wrong, let alone increase the price.

Thanks for your accurate response!

Cheers,

Today I drove my X308 about 600 miles, yesterday I drove about 900 miles -- this car is so fantastic on the road!

Old Mike that's awesome! I wish I could be on a road trip getting to know mine as well. Any issues with oil burning? I'm sure the coolant temperature has been rock steady. Cabin is hush quiet I'm sure. Enjoy the road trip.

I got myself new antenna mast , old one was not coming out when I turn on radio. Now when I leave the car, I make a stop and admire my antenna retract :-)

Needless to say, equipped with youtube videos I took the whole thing apart before replacement part came, and when it came - according to instructions on the package all I had to do is unscrew top nut, pull the old mast out and insert new one in... well, next time I will be smarter...

Default antenna mast

That only works when nothing is broken inside the winder: I had to clean a foot of cord out. Bob's YouTube was perfect.

Smile Weekend trip

put 550 miles on the big cat, round trip to Olney Md for Mother's Day. Dinner in Bethesda was fabulous.

24.5 mpg (US gal); not bad for 13 year old car. Still slight shimmy in left front tire at 85. Back to the tire shop. No oil burn; temp stayed even 198* while rolling (with AC on); rising to 205 in an hour wait trying to get on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge at Annapolis, but dropped back to 201 as soon as the fans kicked on.

All in all, agree with Old Mike, great road trip car and getting better. Discovered that sitting in traffic with an arthritic back and knees sucks no matter what you drive (but seating was better in the Range Rover if you had to sit with foot on the brake).

Yeah, I got a piece of plastic cord out as well... cleaned everything and put new grease... not a total waste of time. I left antenna mast itself dry though... it looks like any oil will only collect dust and make it stick again...

On Saturday, had my car at a PDR specialist's home(been doing it 15 years) and it was amazing!!

While in storage it got some good dents on the door, two big dents on the quarter panel right on the body line ( someone "needed" to move it, jacked it up and pushed on the quarter panel) and multiple(6 large depressions like 1" hail or something) on the deck lid and roof from a kid walking on(saw the smaller shoe prints in the dust) it. And a dent near the gas filler( before I owned it, obviously from the gas nozzle itself resting) as well as near the hood ornament where it looks like someone at some point pushed down on it. I have never noticed it lol, but he saw it.

Anyway after 4 plus hours, I returned to pick it up, INCREDIBLE is all I can say. He doesn't drill or wetsand. It looks like nothing ever happened. On the back sides of the panel not seen to the eye, you can see where he used his tools, but I don't care, no body work and factory paint intact!!

Just bought a Porter Cable 7424xp for 99 through Amazon(special right now and will be here Wednesday!) and Meguires pads and backing plate. Now I'm going to clay and polish the car and post picks hopefully later this week. I'm so excited, to have the car back to where it used to be and soon a new headliner!

Chris

Ps Amazon's Price is 119. But this week when you add it to your cart you get another 20 off.

At the end, that is what it is all about, right?
Happy for you, Mike!
