Default What is this noise?

Just bought myself an X308 XJR and looking over the different faults and quirks. When turning on the ignition I can here a strange whirring noise… Does anyone have an idea of what this could be?
Much appreciated in advance.

Climate control servos and the throttle body are noises that are common with the KEY ON ENGINE OFF.

Apologies - I thought I attached a video but I didn’t seem to work. Follow this YouTube link to hear what I’m hearing.

Not hearing anything out of the ordinary. Maybe some water pump hum or idler tensioner. Sound is not great (nor is my hearing).

That's the first thing that came to mind when I saw the first post. May need a bleed/fill, maybe just needs driven to get bubbles worked out (mine was like this after sitting for a few months, a short drive resolved it), or the pump may be going bad.

JMorris, do you have the shop manual for instructions on how to fill/bleed the SC coolant circuit?

I’m going to third the motion for the intercooler water pump. Now’s a good time to upgrade to the Bosch 0392022002 intercooler water pump. Get the Bosch EV1 fuel injector connector because the jag connector is much different.

Interesting, I didn't realize that I/C pump noise meant there is an issue with it. Good to know, as my car has always made that noise at key on. Luckily, I do have a Bosch 010 pump and +1.5 psi pulley in the toolbox sitting.

The 2 cabin blower motors even in the off position can still maybe have a light running flow for government regulatory cabin ventalation so no carbon dioxide poisoning

You can pull the fans fuses or relays to tell

there is also a small sample air fan below and to the left of the steering column , this fan can get clogged and cleaned with air only and no solvent

Parker, I thought the same thing before I listened to the video. The giveaway in the video was when he got closer to the radiator hose. Just underneath that hose is the intercooler water pump. My (now my daughters car) 98’ XJR made the same noise when it was going out.

I’ll give it a good drive once the weather is a bit better as I’ve also got to tackle a slight rust problem (haven’t even had a good look under the car yet - pray for me). 😂

I don’t have any manual - is it an easy enough process?

Most likely the intercooler/supercharger pump.

I replaced mine earlier, have a look at this thread for lots of useful information:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...t-pump-199158/

If you want to hear what mine sounds have a look here:

If you scroll through the various post you will come across all the details of replacing it.

Good luck

Jeroen
