What should be considered?

I have the opportunity to get ahold of a 1998 Jaguar XJ8 with 129,000mi from a Jag mechanic, it is in excellent shape cosmetically, and the mechanics are as they should be. (the car had been sitting for two years, the mechanic just did $500 worth of maintenance on the engine) I was just wondering what I should be looking out for on the car, like any potential problems? Is this a safe car to buy? (mechanically)
Thanks!
Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!
The early cars had a number of issues that were critical. The most common one was the cam chain tensioners. You should verify that they have been replaced. If not, you absolutely must do that. Cost $800 indy, $200 DIY. That MY was subject to a Service Action (recall) to replace the throttle body. That could be a big deal if it hasn't been done. At the top of the XK8/R forum (same running gear) is a FAQ sticky with a long check list of issues.
Biggest issue is that these cars cost a lot more in both labor and parts than a Chevy. A 13 year old Jaguar is best owned by a hobby mechanic. If you are prepared to do that then by all means grab it. If not, a better investment of your money would be to find an '02-'03 that Jaguar had engineered out all the issues over the years.
