Default What is a "Transponder Chip Key" ?

See: http://www.autotransponder.com/2001_...ansponder_chip

I need a dupe of my key since the dealer gave me only 1 (and no remote, either... argh).

Is this some kind of security feature? And, did the 2001 XJ VDP utilize these?

This same site sells the remotes, but for $139... ugh. Maybe the ones on Ebay are just as good? But I have no idea about the frequency, etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

I do not remember any security in the key -- I went to the dealer and they cut in while I waited. I do not remember it being all that expensive. Give you local dealer a call and ask them what price they can sell it to you for.

I do remember that the guy who cut mine was able to tell what the cut was with just a quick glance of my key

I believe you will have to get another key made by a dealer. And it will be very expensive (mine cost two or three hundred bucks, if I remember correctly). I don't know of any third party keys that will work.
On the other hand, remotes you get on eBay will work, IF YOU GET THE RIGHT ONE. You can program them yourself.

Default Key Price from Jag Dealer...

Key is $64
Cutting is $25
Programming is $80

Total is $169.

Remotes: $266 (Can you say "Ebay?")

Need to find out if anyone else can cut and program the key.

Another option is to get a key cut at your local motor factors, it won't start the car but you'll be able to open it. They're the same as Ford. Cost $10
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Jaguar-Tibbe-B...#ht_500wt_1156
Also, if you get a genuine blank Jag key (some on ebay)
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Jaguar-XJ-Seri...e#ht_876wt_905
get it cut to the original then you need someone with the IDS software to program the car's security to the new key chip. A good Jaguar independent should have this, ring around maybe? Take the car and new key and get it linked to the car.
The fob is a 4 button remote 433mhz type. Should be loads on eBay.

HJD-7230AA/1 Key-Blank $37.50

LJE-26610AC Transmitter 95.50

Program remotes and keys - 50.00

This was for my 02 XJR a little over two years ago - it looks like I am incorrect that the key does not have a chip -- since they list it as being programed.

My remote type is LJE2610-AB, for an 02 XJ8 VDP.

When I bought the car, I received two ignition keys and one remote. I ordered a second remote on eBay using the above type number (very inexpensive; can't remember exact amount). Took it all to my independent Jag mechanic; he programmed them all for free, but I contributed $20 to his 'beer fund.'

Not sure how to get a second key, but with the correct model type number eBay is the only reasonable way to get the remote.

ant17-
My sad opinion is that you will need to bend over and endure the pain at the dealer. The only way to ease the burden is to get a couple made; will cost less than twice the cost of one. You can do remotes yourself, but not keys.

Try www.keysinthe post .com (remove spaces) They're in the UK. I know they cut them (from your photo). Ask about programming.

Update:

Seller just informed he found the extra key for my car, was there 26 miles away before he hung up the phone.

The ring has a black key a green key and the remote.

Is the green the valet? If so, how does it work?

The valet key is used in conjunction with the valet button, you press this and give the green key to the valet, it will start the car, but will not allow access to a locked glove box or boot/trunk. I can't remember what else.....without looking at the handbook, that maybe something to track down if you haven't got it.

Default Transponder Key program

Hi I have a 2001 XJ8 in THAILAND with the only dealer being a pirate and 600 mi away.

I got a key online and had it cut by a guy with a laser cutter but the local programmer can read the keys in his "box" but can not set up the new one without "software 9I translate a translation) Any idea where I can get a copy of the software?

Thanks

That will be a tough one. In your area it's even more complicated.

Not sure if even the locksmiths stateside have that access.
