Whats A good code reader

goodz:
In addition to the info in the general tech help section, if you are serious about diy maintenance of a Jaguar, I recommend you coinsider Autoenginuity with Jaguar extensions. The basic plus extended software will cost about $600. and requires a computer to run on, but you can chart dara (good for drivability issues and O2 sensor diagnostics).
It lacks the ability to program modules, but reads most of the sensors on all modules, including the transmission and AND absat least on the 2002 XJ8. I have not found it to read as much on my 99 XJR and very little on the XJ6.
Theur tech support is sorta spotty- sometimes pretty good and sometimes less helpful in my experience. Some folks have reported issues with connection and I have found it to take a few computer "boot bounces" to get connected at times, but the info after connection is extremely valuable to figure out whats going on.
Un any case, the ability to graph the signals over time should be one of your features to look for in any scanner system.
Good luck.

I have an Equus 3130 that I got from Amazon for $130. You can get their 3040 for around $80. Both of these will give you live data which let's you see what is happening as you drive. You can compare their models at www.iequus.com
A lot of cars put out generic codes. It is simple and easy for the manufacturers. Most of the codes that people want help with here are generic like P0121. An example of Jag manufacturer codes are P1000 and P1111. My Scan tool puts out both.

There is a sticky dedicated to this topic:

I agree with sparkenzap though, the Autoenginuity + Jag Extensions is the least expensive way to read all the Jag specific codes.
