Where to buy CATS shocks...
I'm (possibly) in need of a rear passenger shock with the CATS suspension. Apparently this seems like a dealer only item and at $430 a piece, they're a bit pricey. I have 107k miles on my '02 so I figure I may as well replace both rears as I'm hearing it's 5 hours labor and a pain to remove them. I've been told the entire rear end has to be dropped.
What's happening is a rattle in the back. By putting your hand at the base of the shock and having someone push up and down on that corner, you can feel and hear a popping sound. I tighted everything up thinking the shock might just be loose. No go on that. My next thought is maybe a bushing, but it's still 5 hours labor to get to the shock to find that out. The car doesn't bounce or bottom out on that corner so I can't imagine the shock is really bad, maybe just some component of it.
Anyway if anyone has any insight on what it could be (I know it's kind of hard to tell from the description), I'd be appreciative. My intent is to have my mechanic drop the backend and try to narrow down and possibly fix the existing shock or bushing, but if that doesn't work, I'd like a backup to the $430 dealer parts...
Thanks!

Thanks Sean. I'm pretty confident that it will end up being a bushing, probably the lower one. Since it takes so much work to get the shocks out, I just want to be prepared in case I actually do need a new shock. I really don't want to car sitting in the shop for weeks while I search and I definitely would like to find something a little less expensive than the dealer part.
As I mentioned, the car doesn't bounce or do anything a bad shock would solicit. It's more a rattle from inside the car over bumps and you can feel a popping sound if you hold the shock while someone pushes up and down on that corner.
The car doesn't leak anything...from anywhere!! It's quite amazing to me. Since I've only owned the car for a month, it's entirely possible that if the shock did leak, it would already be empty. I'm sure I would notice that in the drive and it may or may not trigger a fault (not sure though).
At the end of the day, I suspect I'll be paying 5 hours labor at $85/hour and probably a $20 bushing. I'll take that over $860 for two shocks plus labor.
Thanks for the help!

the shocks do knock when bad too. just because they dont leak or bounce DOES NOT meen theyre not bad. I just did 1 on a friends XK for this exact reason. I would buy the shocks and upper foam mounts that the coil springs ride in since they deteriorate and youre paying alot for labor. Would hate to pay for labor twice now wouldnt you???

You can remove the shocks by removing the lower frame plateand not the entire rear end. If you are working from jackstands unbolt the frame and lower it down with a jack. Then unbolt the upper shock mount, unclip the shock wiring, remove the lower shock bolt (hopefully) and then you can remove the spring/shock assembly. Sometimes the lower bolt rusts solid to the lower control arm or the lower shock bushing (been there, cursed that) and you have to cut the bolt off.
If the shock with pivot from the lower control arm you may be able to change the bushing with the shock in place with a ball joint C-clamp. I have 92K on my VDP S/C with adaptive shocks and the shocks are fine but I had to replacethe bushings
