Where to buy parts, and a couple of total newb questions
1998 XJ8.
So the Jaguar isn't actually my car, it's my sister's. She knows nothing about cars, and I'm a Mercedes guy, and she (and her car) are 500 miles away from me. But I'm still the one she calls on.....
She was pulling out of her driveway today and snagged the passenger side mirror on the gate. It's broken - I don't know exactly what that means (hanging by the electrical, or cracked, or just doesn't work) but I do know it's more than just the glass. She asked me to find a replacement for her somewhere. Before I go scrounging around the salvage yards out here, I thought I'd ask if there's someplace y'all prefer to buy this type of part? I've tried a couple of my go-to Mercedes parts places that also sell Jaguar parts, and neither of them list the mirrors in their catalogs. A couple of googles for Jaguar passenger side mirror gave me lots of hits for replacement glass, but no hits for the whole assembly.
First newb question: All the places I've hit for parts want to know if this is a base model, or an L. I've googled pictures of both, and don't see a difference in the mirrors. Is there a difference? The only thing my sister could tell me is that the mirror has memory, so it follows the seat position.
Next newb question: Is this something that's fairly easy to replace? I talked her through changing the thermostat when it needed replacement - she knows what the tools are, and she's willing, she just has never worked on a car before. Thermostats, though, are pretty limited in where they can be and how you have to get to them. Mirrors are a different story. If this involves removing a door panel, it might be better to wait until the next time I go out to visit. And if someone has a link they can direct me to with directions, I'll print it out and take it with me and you'll have both my and my sister's thanks.

I really liked the guys at Specialized British Recycling in Rancho Cordova, CA back when I lived down there and was restoring/modifying my XJS. They've usually got some really good cars to work from. Just give them a ring, they ship last I checked.

the wing mirror on XJ's is very simple to remove and replace - there is a black triangle trim piece that clips to the inside of the door, this covers a torx bolt that bolts the mirror on. To remove the trim just use a flat bladed screwdriver and gently pry it so you can pull it towards the back of the car. Unbolt it, with the window down so you can support it with one hand, or have someone hold it while you undo it. Unclip the wiring, then opposite to install.
There is a question to ask your sister, does the car have powerfold mirrors?

Jaguar JTIS information on XJ8 door mirror r&i
I have program on my PC that runs Jaguar JTIS (Jaguar Technician Information System) CD. I looked up the door mirror r&i operation that give instructions for each step of the removal and installation with illustrations. I was going to include these in PDF files in this post, but after I uploaded the files into the reply post I could not get them to download (in the preview mode) when I tried the option to open or save them.
I was able to upload (and view in the preview) these 2 jpg files that make up the first pdf file (note - double click the jpg images for larger view).
Here are two jpg files that made up the first pdf file:
1) 98 jaguar xj8 exterior mirror r&i 76.10.52.jpg
2) 98 jaguar xj8 exterior mirror r&i 76.10.52.jpg
Send me an email and I will send you the instructions by attaching the pdf files (there are 7 files) in a reply email message.
Also I found out that only XJ8 made for England and some for Canada have the Powerfold mirrors.

Image of Engine showing Bank 1 and Bank 2
Look at this image (Thank you test point - it was in one of your posts): (to view larger image - put your mouse pointer on the image)
.
I have not shopped for this part yet. You might try AutoZone or Advance Auto Parts stores. They are also on the internet.
I do not know if they sell oem parts there.
