Hi mobile1,

A reed valve is a simple type of one-way valve or check valve. Typically, a fluid port is covered by a flexible plate or "reed." The reed is often made of thin spring steel. When pressure or suction causes the reed to flex, fluid passes through the port. When pressure drops or reverses, the reed lays flat against the port again so fluid cannot return by the same path. Often, multiple reed valves are grouped together in a component.

In your case, the reed valves are inside your air conditioning compressor. It is possible to rebuild the compressor and replace the reed valves, but for most DIYers it's easier and more economical to just replace the compressor with a new or remanufactured part. Here's a diagram illustrating how reed valves allow/prevent the flow of refrigerant inside the compressor:

Cheers,

Don

thanks alot . I didn't have any idea about it . now my ac is ice cold but making noise and rpm needle vibrate when I turn it if I keep using this ac compressor does it make any serious problem for the engine or any other parts ?

Check your car for the TSB 412-10 "Revised Suction Pipe".

I have no idea?

Some of my cars have the old one piece pipe and some have the updated pipe assy.

Both work fine.

Assuming your diagnosis is correct and the problem is with the air conditioning system and not something else, you should be able to drive the car as long as you want. You can drive the car with the A/C system completely disabled or with most of it removed from the vehicle.

But if your diagnosis is wrong and the problem lies elsewhere, there's no way to guess whether or not it's safe to drive it.

Cheers,

Don
