Whining noise

Hopefully somebody can help diagnose a whining noise which is getting louder on my 2001 XJ8. I started hearing a high whine recently that changes pitch with gear changes. No noise at idle or when simply reving the engine. It sounds like an alternator, but why no noise when revving out of gear?
Any thoughts please?

Hi Jim,
Hard to say, I opened the windows whilst driving but it wasn't any louder. I notice the noise in the cabin, but with the high pitch and my dodgey hearing it's hard to pin point location. I have to replace the drive shaft rubber couplings (parts on order) and therefore suspect the drive shaft bearing....
The noise changes pitch with gear shifts, and seems to be intermittent in as much as this morning it was much louder than this afternoon when I had a local mechanic ride along on a test drive...
Hope this helps...

I just bought my first Jag a couple of weeks ago and after a few days I heard a whining noise coming from the engine bay that changed with engine speed. It may sound weird but the noise sounded like the "jetsons" car noise from the old cartoon. Turns out it was the sound of the A drum failing in the transmission. Parts arrive tomorrow for a repair this weekend.

I'm slightly embarrassed to mention this, but I found the source of the whining noise... I have been using a radio transmitter for listening to music from my phone / MP3... it turned out that the noise was coming from the stereo when using lower FM frequencies. Thanks to everyone's advice, and ah well, I'm sorry to waste your time!
