Default wrong VIN?

Hello everyone,

I am going to take a look on a jaguar x308 tomorrow and the owner send me VIN. But the problem is, that the VIN is SAJJJALG4CR831810, which according to decoders is year 2012 (should be year W). This VIN is both on the car and in papers. Is there a possibility, that this VIN is actually genuine form factory? Or should I back off from it?
Thanks for reply.

Hi
I think that the On-line VIN decoder works only for North American cars, i checked mine with no result.
Before to by mine i was at a local dealer and ask him nicely to give me a description from their system, optional installation and date of birth.
Good luck.
If you pay a fair price and if the car are in good condition go for it.
On this forum if you search you will find some pdf files, will help you to decode the VIN
Best regards

Hi michalv,

A very simple check is to consult jaguarclassicparts.com, the official parts source of the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust. According to the model divisions there, the last six digits of X308 VINs range from 812317 to F59525, so the car you're going to see would appear to fall into the correct range:

Cheers,

Don

Thanks for reply! I was wandering around net searching for VINs of other cars, and none in Europe so far seems to work with VIN decoders. So I guess it really doesn't work for those jags, for some reason. Which I don't get...

It's because there are numerous VIN systems/conventions in use by different manufacturers. Not all internet VIN decoders are mutli-lingual, so to speak. Many speak 'North American' only.....which someone alluded to earlier.

North American cars, domestic or imported, must comply with North American VIN standards. Other markets/regions/countries may have a different standard, or perhaps no standard at all.

This was blatantly evident on older Jags...80s vintage, for example. When the car was built Jaguar gave it a VIN that satisfied Jaguar corporate needs/purposes. Cars going to North America were assigned an *additional* VIN that met North American requirements. *Both* VINs were plainly visible....causing confusion and concern to anyone not familiar with the practice.

Cheers
DD
