x 308 XJR (mfg 8-2002) differential oil leak
I though changing a bearing was no big deal at the output of the diff, until I found out they are 450-500USD each. From some parts diagrams there looks to be a bearing housing o-ring, but don't know if this is for my car. My manual is silent on any o-ring. I see where some say change the bearing & forget re-sealing but their is no noise or play in the wheel.
Can an o-ring be installed? I have pix of my driver side and passenger side. DS is leaking but its not too bad - 90,000 miles. Slight clunk every little bit but nothing bad. Don't want to make it worse - just bought it 2 weeks ago.
Help?

https://www.alldatadiy.com/ should have a manual for this to get you started. Or there is a sticky for a manual in the forum: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...archive-65998/

ReluctantMechanic,
See the links in this post from plums for some very good detail on the diff output shafts:

You can look up the part numbers at jaguarclassicparts.com. I don't think they should be anywhere near the price range you quoted. Check the good independent Jaguar parts suppliers like forum sponsors Coventry West (near you in Lithonia), SNG Barratt and Jagbits, who offer discounts to Jaguar Forums members. Other potential sources are Welsh Enterprises and RockAuto (who lists an entire kit by SKF for just $80.79 - please confirm it will fit your car (SKF is a long-time OE bearing supplier to Jaguar, Ferrari and many others)).
Cheers,
Don

Where is the diff output shaft o-ring?
Thanks Don. I did check CWas cheapest @ 440.00. This is the differntial bearing not the wheel bearing. Someone makes that bearing for another puopose but who knows the class or loading?
Thanks Mustangtyson, I have the 98-03 factory shop manual. The one you recommend I tried to load a couple years ago but I missed the "meat and potato" part of the program. If you have the JTIS successfully installed would you mind looking at the rear differential output shaft to see if there is more than what I am attaching? I got a price for the o-ring for ~28.00

Sorry ReluctantMechanic,
Somewhere between my quick looks at jaguarclassicparts.com, CW and rockauto.com I got my bearings confused. It's late and my brain must be in a fog. Here's the diagram from jaguarclassicparts.com:
Assuming I'm thinking clearly and it's the differential output shaft bearings and seals you need:
A spot check at CW shows the inner diff carrier bearing, Part 22 (JLM20336) is $47.46.
RockAuto has bearings and one of the seals listed under Drivetrain/Axle Shaft Bearing, /Axle Shaft Seal, and /Differential Bearing, and they range from cheap to reasonable. Some of the bearing cones and races are listed separately so you have to order both.
To compare to Jaguar prices, at jaguarmerriamparts.com JLM20336 is $97.57...
From the diagrams, it appears that these are standard tapered roller bearings, and I assume they were made by one of Jaguar's primary OEMs, like SKF, Timken or Koyo. If your existing bearings have part numbers etched into the inner rings and back edges of the races, you can probably order them from any good industrial supplier for cheap. Searching the Timken part finder for a 2002 XJ8 turns up some diff bearing part numbers:
Timken Online Parts Catalog
Maybe I'm missing something but I can't imagine a couple of bearings and seals would cost anywhere near $400. On our XJ40, which is pretty similar in terms of actual bearings, the parts have cost me around $100 per side (if memory serves).
Hopefully one of our members who has done this job on an X308 will chime in with some advice and affordable parts sources.
Cheers,
Don
