Talking X308 real left wheel rattle ...

Hi !

My 2001 X308 develoed a much annoying rear left wheel rattle.

Took it to garage this morning, jacked the old smoke up, took the left real wheel off and inspected all visible bushings, NO PLAY found anywhere,

So, now I think it might be some play in the shock absorber top securing AND / OR the big donut "upper spring isolator".

I have been thinking of replacing the donut.

Anyone any idea ? Im my manual, I find: spring upper pan, spring isolator and spring packing ring.

Where does one buy the donut ?

Thanks.

With kind regards,

Takeo.

Check/tighten the handbrake cable to the rear shoes.
The cable sometimes rattles the mechanisms in the drum area.

Take up the slack but don't overtighten.

Things to check aside from the spring isolator would be the two smaller foam shock mounts up top (foam looks similar to the front upper shock mounts) and the lower shock mount, which is a sort of elliptical bushing. The isolator is available on rock auto, the shock mounts usually come with shocks, and if the isolator is worn the upper mounts probably are as well.

If you cant see directly what it is that is rattling..

Pull the Wheel, of with the caliper and off with the diskdrum.

It can be the parkbrake brake caliper lining that have come off the caliper..

It makes a really annoying rattling/woshing/whining noice if they come off..

Thank you all for your advice, as soon as I can I will check the parking brake cable.

I do NOT hear any whining ad/or other sound when driving than a very annoying metal to metal rattle even at the slowest speed, for instance when driving over a sewer manhole cover, that is how I found out it IS the left rear wheel. Doing the same none of the other wheels produce any rattle at all.

Funniest of all things is that it rattles even when almost coasting to a stop driving over that manhole cover.

Another vote for the park brake mechanism. Drove me nuts until I finally found the problem. Easy fix

For reference, the parking brake lever should click about 3 times before getting tight. Another 1-2 clicks should be fully tight. Be sure to hold the threaded part with a wrench while tightening the nut under the car.

Thank you for this advice ! Please not that my hand brake does not really "work", i.e. whne coasting to a stop at a very slow speed, I can pull that handbrake handle as are as I want, it will not really stop the car. Brake linings are ok, though. Also impossible to use the handbrake to make the care "break out" in a turn.
