Is it say a 6 X 9 or similar in size to mount correctly and is it a dual cone ?
You can repair the existing speaker by replacing the speaker cone surround foam ( not the mounting foam) which rots and goes bad in the following vendors video and see the link to there website for more info . To order the replacement foam you would have to remove the speaker and get the specific cone edge and speaker frame dimensions other then say the generic 6 X 9 . Below is a dimension pic for a X300 non - premium door round speaker ( yours may be different on the X308 ) as a gluing surface overlap is important . You might be able to order a couple of different sizes in a estimated range and return what you don't use as this would negate the need the remove and replace the parcel shelf twice .

I have repaired 3 or 4 dual coil 6 x 9 X300 and X308 subwoofers in the last year.
The Harmon Kardon and Alpine use the same repair kit. I use Speaker Works (like Lady Penelope) but there are others like simply speakers.com etc.
6" x 9" Angled Speaker Repair Kit For Replacing Foam Surrounds
I also repair the 6 1/2" door loudspeakers with the SWK65
6 1/2" Speaker Repair Kit For Replacing Foam Surrounds - Advent, Bang & Olufsen, Boston Acoustics, JBL, Heathkit, Polydax, Paradigm

I repaired a couple as well. Hardest part is removing rear shelf without crushing the edges.
I've looked multiple times for new speakers and every time I have just repaired. Very easy for almost anyone.
Follow links above.

Do you already have a Subwoofer? You don't mention if you do or not and adding one to the system is not just a simple case of plug in and play. However I'll assume for now you do have one.
My rear sub was damaged so I replaced it, for now, with a 6x9 high specification 3 way speaker and plugged in just one of the two plugs. It does work well but ideally you'd want the original one working correctly. So repair, something I'm going to attempt on my old one, is your best option.

It's been a while since I looked at the X300 door speakers. The Premium Sound in the X300 is Harmon Kardon.

Thanks to you all.
I do have the original subwoofer but as you've all correctly identified, all the foam is gone. The paper cone is actually separated completely from the foam surrounds.
Stu, which speaker did you use to replace the original subwoofer? As you know, the depth of the original speaker is very shallow. A replacement would have to be quite skinny.
Thanks again all.

Honestly, you'll be farther ahead to repair the one that's there, it's relatively inexpensive, it's matched to the original system, and you have to remove the parcel shelf either way. As you've seen there are very few shallow mount 6x9s to begin with, and you're going to use a full range speaker that will get filtered out (thankfully). I repaired mine, and the sound is rather impressive for what it is, especially setting to the FRONT sound stage setting. Sure you won't get real deep bass but it's certainly better than a lot of stock systems I've heard.
It really only took overnight to fix mine. It was a 5 minute job to glue the new foam in. Took it out one night at home, pulled the speaker and glued it. Next morning, put it back in, and away ya go.

It's a shame there's no way to replace the cardboard cone on the alpine with a plastic one, that'd be good. I mentioned this to my friend and he queried whether it would be possible to coat the cardboard in brush on resin to imitate plastic, but I'm not sure if this would work.

Many people that do replace it with a stock single coil 6x9 just use one side of the factory harness. The sub frequencies aren't usually out of balance Left-to-Right in music, i.e. you don't usually hear the bass from only one channel, like you do sometimes with vocals and mids - the bass is present in both channels pretty much all the time. It does work, though not optimally, but with a serious lack of shallow mount, dual voice-coil 6x9 woofer speakers on the market, it's one option that has been used.
