Hi all, I'm new to this forum but already greatly appreciate the knowledge I have gained from in my first few months of Jag ownership!


I have recently brought a 1998 4.0 XJ8 with 85,000 miles on the clock. I brought it initially as a bit of cheap fun to use in the summer, but I have fallen in love with it and decided I want to put some of the faults right!


I have changed the tensioners (which were the mk1 ones and absolutely shot) and put 10w/40 with restore in it to pretty much cure the vvt knock (it's only there on warm start ups now - quick rev and you don't hear it until the next warm start up.)


The next issue, and I assume its a big one, is the transmission. Out on the road it's silky smooth, no trouble shifting, sports mode does what it should, its perfect. The issue is the change from 1st to 2nd under anything more than light acceleration. In between the two gears there is a loud screech/squeal/whine from the transmission. After about 1/2 hour of driving it's completely gone and you cannot make it make the noise.


The noise does not affect the performance of the transmission, no judder/high revs etc. I cannot understand it. I checked fluid level which was spot on, and then did a drain and refill with new filter and the proper esso/mobil fluid. Had a good look at the valve body whilst in there and there are no cracks yet the noise persists. Should I flush again to get more clean fluid in there? The fluid that came out was not burnt or particularly dirty.


Does anyone know what this could be? Any help would be greatly appreciated! I have access to a 3.2 X308 at a breakers yard in the village and could pinch bits out of the transmission in that (assuming its the same for the 3.2 and 4.0).

Ties, I realise it's a 3 year old thread but did you ever figure out the squeal/ whine that your transmission made, changing from 1st to 2nd?
I have, what sounds like , the same symptom on my '98 VDP, after installing the TransGo control upgrade kit.
