I would like to know if anyone has an opinion of which valve cover gasket set is better for XJ308, FEL-PRO VS50724R or VICTOR REINZE VS50397. Also would like to know is there any additional sealant required for the valve covers. I seem to recall seeing that somewhere.

Hey ! FEL-PRO VS VICTOR REINZ ... by far VR. I looked everywhere to find it for my 2000 XJR and it took my a while but I was lucky and got it from someone that bought it and later sold the vehicle. I got an incredible price. VR Gasket has a high price but is either VR or Manley Gaskets. You know that Jags runs extremely hot and I have replaced FEL-PRO already twice going to the third. Although, MAHLEY Gaskets Corp has exclusive rights for VR distribution, but they have theirs and other brands. I have spoke to various "savy" European Technicians and all of them says Victor Reinz VS50397 or Manley. Hope this clear out your doubt.

There are TWO different cam cover gaskets depending on ENGINE NUMBER.(or cam cover from the early engines)
To engine number 9810290000. (they are the orange and grey seals that are 'thicker')
Later engines use the black 'thin' seals that you all are talking about.(probably FROM Oct. 30 1998 onward)
