XJ8 (2001) Engine noise
Hello
I am new to the site. I notice there have been several pots about engine noise so please forgive me if this is old news to some.
I have a 2001 XJ8 (3.2L) which has done 70k miles and is in very nice condition. I previously had a 1999 XJ8 (4.2) on which I changed the timing chains and tensioners for third generation so do know my way about these cars but am by no means an expert... I also had a 1968 Mark 2 till about 4 years ago... Too much work to keep happy though!!
To the problem: The car runs well but at around 2000 RPM I get a sort of whurring noise which seems to come from the engine area. It is not tyre noise because I get it when stationary but only bewtween 2000 and 2500 revs. Over 2500 no noise.... under 2000 no noise....
I have read on one site that a similar noise can be got rid of by pressing 'sport mode' but this is not the case with me.
I am inclined to think it is one of the auxilliary plant running from the belt... (Alternator or something) Either that or one of the OHC bearings.
Any ideas would be very greatly appreaciated before I start tearing the heart out of the old gilr!
Many thanks

It is better to keep one's mouth shut and be presumed a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.

Your devilish noise might be coming from the tensioner pulley - a length of hose, one end stuck in your ear the other moved around the engine compartment when the noise is occurring (use a friend on the throttle) can help you locate the sorcerer... uh, source.
