Question XJ8 2002 ZF5HP24 diy rebuild selects drive only P0706

HELP ANYONE!
Spent over £500 on parts ridiculously parts mainly from USA not including oil.
Reason for rebuild when hot gearbox slipping going into limp mode.
Believing it was possible the A drum? Stripped gearbox to find it was A/C needle bearing all the bearings had tapered to a point and were falling out.

The gearbox has had new steels/friction plates in the A-C clutches with a new uprated A Clutch drum, using banner rebuild kit. Initially tested gearbox while in air rear wheels free to turn. All forward gears turned wheels up to 70 mph. Reverse sounded and felt like selecting reverse but no corresponding wheel movement just stationary. Then lowered to ground!
When in reverse it goes forward and also in Neutral and Park. The J selector appears to be working, the rotary switch appears to be working turning the reverse lights on when reverse is selected. It has so far taken 8-9ltr of ATF Plus oil.
The ignition states restricted power and the fault code P0706.
The rotary switch fell apart when dismantling the gearbox I put it back together with rivets could this be the problem?
Could the selector cable require adjusting?
Is there enough oil? Too much oil?
My friend whom is a mechanic although with no experience of automatic gearbox's helped me rebuild it. The friction plates and steels were all taken out and placed in reverse order so when rebuilding they were in there correct position (1 steel followed by the corresponding friction plate discarding the original steel and plate).
There is no noises from the gearbox it is very quiet and smooth.

Hi Andy2968,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us.

Your P0706 code does suggest a problem with the rotary switch or cable adjustment. You can find the definition and possible causes of the code in the manual at this link:

Jaguar ZF 5HP24 DTC Summaries

Regarding the fluid level, there is a specific filling routine and the fluid level must be set with the fluid at 40 deg. Centigrade. One source of the instructions can be found here:

ZF 5HP24 Fluid Level Procedure CTSC

Did you fill the gearbox with one of the ZF approved transmission fluids? I don't recognize "ATF Plus." The fluids I am aware of that are known to be correct in the 5HP24 are:

ZF Lifeguard 5
ESSO LT 71141
Febi Automatikgetriebeol (ATF) Nr. 29738
VW/Audi G 052 162 A2
Pentosin ATF 1
Ravenol ATF 4/5 HP

Also, please visit the New Member Area - Intro a MUST and post a required introduction so we can learn something about you and your Jaguar and give you a proper welcome.

Cheers,

Don

Regarding the gearbox I purchased Triple QX ATF Plus from Europarts, They recommended only 2 transmission oils for the gearbox 1 was Triple QX ATF Multi which had the LT 71141 code in the description the other was more expensive but a better quality. Europarts advised either was ok for the gearbox as they are newer oils but covered the requirements for the ZF gearbox.

As far as I have been able to determine, Triple QX is a private brand bottled exclusively for Euro Car Parts. The supplier is not disclosed, and the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is not available online. According to the label of Triple QX ATF Plus, it is claimed to be equivalent to Dexron VI, which is cause for concern:

The most obvious problem is that for a typical Dexron VI such as those manufactured by Castrol and Valvoline, the kinematic viscosity at 40C is +/- 30 mm2/sec. However, the kinematic viscosity of ZF Lifeguard 5 at 40C is 37 mm2/sec, or 23% more viscous (thicker) than Dexron VI. This alone suggests that Triple QX ATF Plus is too thin and not suitable for use in the ZF 5HP24 transmission, despite any claims made by Euro Car Parts.

Without a published MSDS, we can't determine the similarity of base oils and additives to compare to Lifeguard 5 or the other known-correct fluids.

We have learned the hard way that we cannot trust the claims of third-party fluid makers and marketers without doing our homework.

Cheers,

Don

Thanks Don I will change the oil as there is no point spending a fortune on parts to use the potentially incorrect oil. Learn something new every day. Why I do my own repairs I unfortunately know the job is done correctly. In the past trusting supposed experts has (Specialist garages Carwood fuel injection) cost me over £2000 as they did not change the cam chain on fuel injection!. £6000 when inferior engine rebuild smashed a hole in piston and side wall of piston lining. Replacement engine fitted blew up again on way to exchange car after less than 500miles. PS not a Jaguar but reaffirmed mistrust in garages over the last 35 years so self taught and will tackle anything with the correct advice.
I love forums at least you can get the correct advise just shows how big companies and not fully aware of the facts and the potential for further problems due to inferior products. I will now stick to named brands Castrol, shell etc not Triple QX.

Hi Andy,

Those published specifications look good, but this product is not currently listed on the website for Westway Lubricants, so if it is a genuine Westway product, it may have been discontinued. You might want to give Westway a call to see what they can tell you:

Westway Lubricants Transmission and Gear Oils

Again, we just don't know if third-party fluids can be trusted. Better to spend a little more on a fluid known to be correct. Premature transmission failure is far more costly than the small incremental expense of proper fluid.

Cheers,

Don
