Default XJ8 Aftermarket Key Fob Operates Trunk & Lights But Won't Lock...

Hi Guys,

I purchased this Key Fob for my 2000 XJ8 4.0 https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-1998-19...5/352437842314

Reprogrammed it successfully but it only opens the boot/trunk and turns on the lights. Very occasionally (1 in 10 times) it might unlock the doors but I have never got it to lock them. I can hear something clicking on the car when I press the lock button though so something is happening (or trying to). Any ideas? Could it be because it's not a genuine Jaguar key fob?

Local garage quoted $250 to supply with a genuine fob and repair but I would like to rule out any simple fixes I might be able to do myself first!

Thanks!

Welcome to 3rd party items...
So, did your previous FOB work?
Next, try holding the lock button for a few of seconds vs prompt and release.
I've included the electrical pdf for you...Chpt 13, pg 76 will give you the locking layout.
If you still have your old remote, this could help... https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...pgrade-210090/
Perhaps Sone can assist you... https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/m...=remote%20x308
KC bought and posted on a similar type... https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...t-fobs-209575/

Thanks Highhorse - sadly it didn't come with the original key fob. I have a couple of originals from UK cars I've owned which I tried reprograming for ages until I checked and found out they used a different frequency in the US, doh.

Strangely though, unlocking seems to be working most of the time now but I still can't get it to lock, tried holding the button down, and no luck.

My hunch is that it's something mechanical or electrical in the car that's stopping it locking rather than the key fob - but I may well be wrong.

I just found an OEM one for $80 on eBay so going to give that a try - perhaps it will work, or it will confirm that it's not the key fob if it has the same issue!

For anyone having this issue, the OEM fob worked perfectly so the issue was compatibility or performance of the aftermarket fob... Moral of the story is always buy genuine Jaguar parts I guess!

Maybe you just got a faulty one.
