Default xj8 left wife stranded

ok, as some may have seen on my first post about the seat i have just bought the wide a 2003 xj8 with 71K miles.

It just died in a parking lot yesterday and has the yellow light and restricted performance showing on the information display.

We drove back from charleston monday through pouring rain. When we got to wilmngton we stopped to eat and when we came out and started it we it displayed the restricted performance but seemed to run fine. We pulled out of the parking lot and as i gave it some gas, it stuttered a few times, almost seemed if i was cutting the key on and off. then it drove off fine, and the display cleared...

it drove the two hours home fine.
When i got home I parked, then immediately had to move the car, upon restarting the abs light was on on the dash...

the next morning my wife drove around some, and then while at the bank, the restricted performance flashed on the dash, and the car sputtered and cut off. she tried restarting and it turned over but would not fire, and the battery light was on...

i am buying a code reader today, and will have what code later today.

felt like the fuel pump cutting out... any preliminary ideas.

Rain, electrical then fuel. Codes are your friend.

well,
when i got to the car, it started but the yellow engine symbol was illuminated..

i checked the code and it was p0102 mass or volume flow circuit low input..

i am assuming that moisture has gotten into the air mass sensor connector has gotten some moisture into it, or a connector corrosion issue.

i think everyone for any input...

As i have said in other posts, we love this car.. comfy, FAST, handles great, so i am sure hoping it is not a major headache consistently.....

check the throttle body connectors too...sensitive to moisture. Have the battery tested also, so many system problems (ABS in addition to the CEL) may be indicative of a weak battery.

It's very rare for a P0102 code to be set unless the Mass Air Flow Sensor is outright unplugged. Are you sure it was not unplugged at some point to inspect maybe, and the ignition left on? Your other symptoms really sound like they could be power supply problem. Be sure to check all the power [battery] cable studs at fuseboxes and at the ECM/Relay box false bulkhead near the RH bonnet latch. The engine management power also comes across the studs on both rear heelboard fuse boxes. There is also a pair of what they call Mega-Fuses in the boot near the battery.

Happy hunting!

P0102 – Blocked air flow, MAFS high resistance, short to ground, supply circuit open or MAFS failure!!

Have you had the TB cleaned, Part load breather stub cleaned?

If you are sure the MAFS is good I would check the wiring going to it and check for chaffing of the wires and a good solid connection to the MAFS. I would also check that the air filter was clean and the box air intake is not obstructed and for the heck of it check the tube from the intake box to the TB for leaks and seated properly. It was suggested that you check the connections at the TB. When checking any plug for good connections you should also check the snugness of the connectors. These cares have a compatibility issue at the connectors so check them. I use CRC contact cleaner and dielectric contact paste. Many will say for you not to use the dielectric paste but I use it faithfully on every plug I work on so I will leave that up to you. You may hold on the paste until the problem is resolved and then do what you want. I hope this helps!

Check it good. I recently helped a member with his trans problem and what he found was a bad connection at a connector on a wiring harness that was just made for him. It was bypassed several times thinking it was new why check it. Check everything!

So, to be clear- Given your last info, you are checking the connectors on the MAF, the full load breather tube and the intake plenum for cracks or air leaks- (the cracks generally run lengthwise and are hard to see), and you might as well check the part load breather as was previously suggested.
Good luck, and check back to let us know how you made out!

well here's the update....
car dies again today while the wife was in the drive through line a the bank (again, but different bank thank goodness)...

got there and it started, but had restricted performance and engine light on...

i checked the codes, and again same code, but also a rich bank 1 and bank 2..

i had not inspected the plug yet, so i popped the hood an the plug for the air mass was 1/2 way off... I feel like an idiot...

the oil change guy was having a hard time getting the air filter cover off, and i finally told him to leave it alone before he breaks something... evidently he had pulled it loose.

Good to know that you found a problem that was fixable.

I always tell the oil change guys to just change the oil, and leave the other filters alone. And even at that, they don't always listen.
