XJ8 non start problems.

XJ8 non start problems.
I've just acquired a 1998 XJ8 Sport (3.2 V8). Drove home fine, parked and pressed a button on the key fob to lock. I may have pressed a few different buttons (4 on the fob with no markings) but car did not lock. So I locked it with the key.
When I opened it the following day, the alarm went off, and stopped when I turned the key in the ignition. However the car would not start. It turned over as if attempting to fire, but would not 'catch'.
The car is in 'valet mode' and I cannot open the boot, either with the key or by pressing the valet mode button. Indeed, when I do press the button, the screen display says valet mode is 'off' yet the boot stays locked.
I'm certain I must have activated some kind of immobiliser system.
Any ideas would be appreciated. There is no handbook with the car.

Thanks for the reply, I'll try the fob again and see how I get on. I only have one key (black).
I've mostly had Italian cars although I have had a Daimler (MK2).
I also race 50's Historics (Lancia B20) and have encountered a few XK120's and 140's at a few meetings.
I acquired an S Type a few months ago (3.0), but the XJ8 is a fine looking and driving car.
