Default XJ8 secondary timing tensioner replacemet questions

Hi, I have a 1999 XJ8 that I would like to replace the secondary tensioners on. I've read a lot of the forums on this and I'm getting confused. Can you some list the step by step instructions to do this? With pictures.

I've read that the crank needs to be locked and then I've seen forums that people are doing it without locking the crank. Locking the cam shafts are a given. Is there a forum listing that I'm missing that gives clear instructions on how to get this job completed successfully?

Thanks.

I've read most all of these post's. I can't figure out which is the best way to do it. The zip tie method or removing the sprocket. Which way do you think is the best? If I do the sprocket method do I need to lock the crankshaft and the camshaft?

Thanks

Or is it possible to break the timing chain and just replace with the a new master link replacement timing chain and not have to do either.

The whole point of the zip tie method is that it is easier - you don't need to lock anything down. But it is not compatible (I don't think) with replacing the secondary chain. The whole point of the zip ties is to maintain the same number of links between the appropriate teeth on the sprockets.

A professional would advise to end up with the cams perfectly in time using the lock down method.

Most do not replace the chains.

Another way to put it, if you use the zip tie method, the cam timing will be no worse - and no better - than it was before you start. The lockdown method ensures the timing will be tweaked back to spec, removing any effects of (for example) chain stretching.
