XJ8L Needs a new head

What is meant by a 'bad head'?????????
Cracked, Warped, Dropped Valve Seat, Corroded, Worn Cam Bearing Areas, Broken/Damaged???????????????????
Machine shops can repair many faults but sometimes a good used replacement is more cost effective.
Are you looking for a complete head or just the bare casting????????
There are differences between the AJ26 and the AJ27 and then more difference between Normally aspirated and Supercharged.
If you are needing a bare casting then any AJ26,27, or 28 will work.
You will need to install all your original tappet and cam components or some combination to get back to original clearance/specs.
A little more info would go a LOOOOOONG way.

I know that the head gasket is blown.
Also, when I rotate the crank full circle, one of the valves opens and by the sound of it, stays open for a moment and then slams closed. I can hear that one.
I do not know if the head is warped. My friend, whose car t his was before he passed away was chasing some burglars that he caught when he came home one day. While chasing them, the car began to over heat, then backfire and sputter. He limped home about 3 miles and that's' when he asked for my help.
We checked timing and everything we could without actually pulling the heads. I found numerous vacuum leaks that I fixed, but with a tick when the crank is rotated once a revolution and the zero compression, throw in the overheating and I would suspect the head needs rebuilt or replaced.

The head might have had a seat come loose. That is a common occurrence when these engine overheat.
As I stated, it would REALLY help you to find a direct replacement complete if you would fill in the MAKE MODEL YEAR of your mystery car.
Any 4.0 Jag V8 head BARE can be made to work with addition work/parts.

@Bob-
I guess there is more info that I need to get. Other than it's a xj8l 4.0L v8 4door. I haven't got any more info. It's naturally aspirated, bur I do not know what 'AJ26, AJ27 orAJ28' is. Are those head casting #s?
@Jhartz- What's in Decatur?
-Thanks-

I say again: if I lived in Dallas Texas, I'd take it to Bob. 50 minute truck ride from The Conony to Decatur. (thanked 1651 times in 1150 posts).
I wish I wasn't a sports fan: I hold the Redskins responsible for my high blood pressure, along with butter bacon steak bourbon red wine. Both teams sucked yesterday; Redskins more than the Cowboys.

I just looked through the shop and remembered I have a complete 1998 AJ26 engine with a worn/knocking crank. I think #3 big end rod bearing is faulty.
The heads are OK because the customer drove the car but was annoyed by the knocking.
I ended up swapping in a used engine about 6 or 8 years ago and the old engine has been sitting in the shop corner for that long.
I guess it could be unbolted and installed without machine work. The valves and cams are already setup so it would be a straight install.
You could have a valve job done if the other head is also being machined.
I also have a 4.0 S-Type AJ28 right hand (bank 1) cylinder head with about 30,000 miles on it. That would need cam swap and valve lash adjustment.
I have a bunch of Jaguar parts hidden under piles of other parts in my shop. I often forget what I have until I look for something else and find a long lost treasure.
Let me know if you are interested in any of this.
