Default XJR clattering noise when cold/accelerating

Hi all,

My daughters XJR (my old one, and soon to be mine again) makes a typewriter sound when under load and cold- any ideas what it might be?

On a side note, she is getting P1222 intermittently- hoping it is not a forshadowing of a TB rebuild....

Thanks!

D

Have you checked carefully under the hood for typewriters?

Is the noise coming from the front of the block? If so it's likely to be the tensioners..

Ok- no typewriters, althought they COULD be hiding..

It sounds like pinging- but my daughter insists she put in the high-octane

Have you heard it in person?

Mine does that and I had it idling last night with the hood open.

Sounds just like a typewriter now that you mention it, and I have
always said "supercharger drive coupling". Replacement kits can
be found on ebay.

It's one of those "someday" jobs.

typewriter .... so you must be over 40 then?

Ok, replaced the battery and all seems well..... could low voltage cause pinging?

Not unless it was low enough to affect the sensor readings and
hence the operation of the ECM.

Very odd ... but hey if it worked ...

On the other hand, I have a brand new, fully charged battery.

Changing the battery could have caused the car to reboot itself, therefore seeming that it was voltage related.

Did a hard reset as well, so I think you are right.

... . . huh?

Once the car is running, the voltage is controlled by the regulator circuit in the alternator. I am missing the physics, here.

My guess, she had crappy gas or low on oil, and "Dad" did what Dads do, filled the tanks -- now runs right.
