Hey guys, I'm working on installing an aftermarket intercooler on my XJR and to my surprise, the coolant bypass hose which goes to the front of the intercooler is actually a dead end. Is it not possible to simply get rid of this line and plug the port at the reservoir? Is there s special barb style plug that will do the job?
I believe that hose is there to purge the air out of that intercooler while filling up the system. I imagine it’ll be tricky getting all the air out of it when you install it.
Your right. There was a piece of debris in the way of the tiny pin hole. Looks like I'll be modifying the aftermarket unit which has no hole. Or perhaps I could use an air lift to fill the system and ditch that circuit.
I see that the aluminium radiator you have shown has a connector for the air purge pipe. Are you saying that the connector is just welded-on with no hole inside? If this is the case, you can just drill a small hole. The purge pipes are mainly to allow air to escape during the system filling but they also provide continuous air or gas purge during operation, just in case any enters the cooling system in some way so it is better to maintain the air purge system.
I installed a similar looking aluminium rad (made in the UK) on my car and it had a hole inside the purge pipe connector:
A little time consuming but not bad all n all for $140. Car is running well, although I'm now getting some pinging from the driver side bank after 4k. Looks like I'll be needing an AFR guage.
Great job and a fantastic looking classic mini lathe. I have a "JET" mini lathe, about the same overall dimensions as your Unimat. Amazing what you can do with these little machines.
