Default XJR Differential Leaks, Noise, Mystery Transmission leak

Hi guys,

I've been pretty discouraged with the Jag of late, she was
egged, scratched and scraped and the parking lot bad luck
was only a shadow to the mechanical maladies to follow.

I've been fearing for this diff since I bought the car, and
despite its being replaced 20k ago with a Jaguar Genuine
Exchange part by the previous owner, it is whining at speed,
and more recently, has made a nasty whine in a parking lot
while changing from P to D Both axle seals are also leaking.
It leaked out .5L this month, so I replenished its supply, but it's
leaking quite a lot. Here is a photo of how much it leaks within
20 miles of city driving.

I also have a slight transmission leak at the back of the
gearbox, can't seem to see what is leaking. Rear seal? It is getting ATF on the rear trans mount. Not dripping off the car but its losing fluid.

I am trying to see what a QDF5W differential will do. I got
quoted $850 for install, plus its $1350 for the Quaife part
from Racing Green. (Lifetime
warranty)

I'll be going through with this soon. Any advice on what to do
with my old diff, where to buy replacement seals, how much
the "set-up" is worth? Also, what could my trans leak be?

EDIT: If I wanted to continue with my whining differential,
how hard is it to replace the axle seals? Is there any way to get
to the axle seals without removing the entire rear suspension?
The book quotes 3h per side for each seal, but how long would
it take me in a mate's driveway?

Ian

Have you read the threads about clogged diff breather vents?

The Quaife is only the locking mechanism. You would be running your current gears and bearings. If it is the gears that are whining, the gears need to be replaced and clearanced. And ... they are not sold separately ... I think.

I have indeed read about the clogged breather vents, mine seems fine.
(I was messing with it whilst underneath topping up the gear lube)
I have no idea what is whining, I haven't had the diff apart.

This is why I need the collective forums knowledge, I am not sure what to do.
Chucking out cash is not the best option. TBH I think I would like to just
do the seals myself and wait for it to die. I'll put in some molybdenum disulphide,
hopefully that will make the diff a bit happier.

Any advice on doing axle seals?

I have read every diff-related thread I can
find, anyone know if the Quaife ATB includes X308 gears/bearings? The guy
at Racing Green Cars hasn't responded to my last email.

differentials genuinely confuse me and I do not have the knowledge
someone out there surely has.

Thanks

Ian

Try costing out a good used differential from any X308 ... they are all the same.

Use the diff from any 4L X308 model-the 3.2L models had a slightly different gear ratio. The XJR was never fitted with an uprated diff & used the same type as on the 4L XJ8.

The whining is probably due to wear on the teeth of the crown wheel & pinion, or the internal bearings. If it's whining & leaking, the cheapest option is to source a good used diff from an XJ8.

A used diff from an XJ8 will have been subject to lower input torque than one from an XJR, so may well be in better condition as it's only had to handle the torque of the normally-aspirated engine & not the greater torque of the XJR's supercharged engine.

Transmission leaks are usually either rear seals, sump pan gaskets, or oil cooler pipework.

I just got a quote from the dealer for seals. They said,
$560 per side. That includes bearings but still. You have
no option of just the axle seal.

I think an XJ8 diff is a good option. Not such a hard life
on the part.

Just got some quotes from my Jaguar specialist today,
(Finally back to Orlando where I have a specialist shop,
All Jaguar inc)

They said some guys on here had sourced differential
bearing/seal assemblies in the UK for £70 or so. I have called
the US Jaguar parts people, quotes between $460 and $556
for each.

Anyone have a lead on the seals? Getting this leak fixed is
going to be impossible if I have to pay $900 for parts.

Side note:
Apparently my engine mounts are on death row so I'm
having those replaced, and I'm at 100,000 so I'll be doing
a transmission service.
