The reason I said you need to swap the lower intake is because I think your injectors are entirely different from the ones in your car. You will have to make that determination. You will also need to remove both of your engines D/S valve cover and see if the reluctors are the same or different.

Did the seller specify how many likes are on the engine??

I have had a look at the injectors and the 'look' the same in that they have the same plug and are physically the same but maybe they behave differently? The seller was given all the info by me in order to determine whether it was the same engine or not and was told that if it had 2 sensors, i didnt want it. He said it had one and sent it!

That's because it was a repeat. You need a 1998/99 AJ26 engine from a supercharged sedan.

The 2000MY XJR was changed to AJ27 and has different sensors and engine management.

hello all again, just thought I would update you on my progress. I got stuck in to the aj27 engine and took the heads off to change the gaskets and get the cams off the aj26 fitted to the aj27 heads, swapped over the injection, coils, new cam sensor, loom, throttle body, flexplate, new crank sensor. Chains and tensioners were already new. Refitted the aj27 and it started first time and ran quite good, good enough to take it for a test which it passed, although the emissions and idling were suspect. Traced the problem to the supercharger seals letting air through. Went away with the kids for the weekend in the caravan and when i returned i decided to have a go at refitting the seals. Shifted the car a few yards from where it had been lying all weekend to the workshop and it didnt run well, limp mode i would say. Sorted the seals and now it wont start. Scanned it and found misfire codes, cylinder 2 and 8 and random. No power to coils on cranking. Anybody out there have any ideas?

I'd clear the codes first and then promptly perform a hard reset. I don't think it will do anything but, it's the first place I would go. Do you have fresh gas in it or is it the same stuff from months ago?

Sounds like 'bore wash' - these units don't like start stop, and really need to be run up to temp before shutting off. Petrol washes the oil from the bores and you loose compression. The fix is to remove the spark plugs and drop some engine oil in, a teaspoon in each bore to get compression back.

Also how is the battery state? I'd suggest putting it on charge as these car dislike a weak battery, 12.5V minimum.

Thanks guys, thought about battery at the outset, have charged it and no difference, the car was fine when i drove it every day for a fortnight, but now it seems to have no feed to coils on cranking. how do you do a hard reset? is it earth cable to positive? I would be going along with the borewash theory as it seems plausible but not now that i have tested the coils! The codes have been cleared and have not come back but it hasnt started since then. There is one code that has been there since i bought the car, which states "wrong module fitted" Strange thing is, it started instantly after having the major engine work done and ran lovely for a week or so.

If you have no power to the coils, I would have a look at the power feed to the ECU. The ignition coils have a feed through a relay, with a separate fuse. What you have is probably a very simple problem since the engine ran after the Frankensurgery!

I found fuse no 3 in the engine box had blown, it says it is ignition coils. I have replaced it but still no start, do i now have borewash? What blew the fuse? the relay? I will try relays tomorrow.

It's a possibility that one of your ignition modules went bad. You'll have to see what else is on that fuse.

Now that sounds plausible, the things on the fuse are, security sounder, headlamp levelling, ignition coils +ve, fog lamp switches.

Well, do you have power to the coils now that you replaced the fuse?

Did the fuse blow again or did power just go away altogether?
