ok here it goes
recieved me xjr yesterday guy i bought it from said it had issues but didnt know what somthing about limp mode
well today i got in and started it up after it was sitting for like 3 or 4 months i think at the guys house
it idles rough probably needs a good tune up
but when i try to rev it wont go past 3.5k rpm
when i put it in drive i give it gas and nothing rpms wont go up or anything its like it doesnt wanna accelerate at all just sits there
rpms wont go up or anything
once i put it in parking i can rev but only to 3.5k rpm please help guys
what could be the problem

 

Normal that it won't rev higher in park or neutral because that is the way it is programmed . Sadly, sounds like your transmission is finished. Hope you got the car for a pittance!

i got the vehicle for 2000 bucks which is not bad has 106k miles and it looks great no dents or no major scratches interior looks clean

i got some other questions what the best items to use for the engine
spark plugs
engine oil
air filter
transmission oil once i get it replaced called a shop and its close to 800 bucks to get is fixed

You've already had the heads up about the 3.5k RPM from Markus. But the other issue you describe (ie put it in drive and it only trickles forward, no matter how hard you push the gas pedal) is how the car behaves if the engine goes into "Failsafe mode" but you would be getting this message in the message centre. Any error messages on the message centre ?

once i put it in drive it dont move or anything i give it gas and nothing rpms wont go up at all

no check engine light or anything just a red light on the cluster
no safe mode or transmission fail coming on the cluster either

 

For what it is worth I had a similar problem with the 1999 XJ8 I got.

Failsafe mode message was on, wouldn't go over 3K RPM (as designed). Tried to move it in drive and it move a little but eventually would stall out.

Code scanned it and it reported a misfire on the #8 cylinder. I took the fuel injector out, which the pintle cap came out in pieces. Bought a new fuel injector (not cheap), put it in and engine problems went away (although a bunch more has come up since :-) ).

Guess what I am saying is code scan it before you panic about the transmission. If it is in failsafe mode I have to believe there are codes in there.

 

If it is the transmission, there is no good news to be had. It took just over 5K to get ours replaced. It was a 1998 XJ8 with about 80K miles and in perfect shape. There were no signs of previous troubles.

Our transmission went out was in limp mode. We took it to AAMCO they found that the a drum was cracked. Rebuilt the transmission for 2500-2600. They had the car close to a week. As of yet no more transmission problems. Good luck.

 

could be the electric throttle also...regular fail item on older X300s...would have "transmission fault" showing on the dash if it were the tranny...also the red indicator IS the check engine light....get back to us when you have the codes.

also when i pulled the transmission pan of and the valve drive there were metal flakes and at the bottom of the pan when i ran my finger across it was all grey probably metal
working on taking the transmission out a lil at at a time found a guy who is going to rebuild it for me for 800 bucks with 12 month warranty cant beat that

 

If this is true, then I don't think your problems are with the transmission.

 

idk im going to check around again todai see what i find look at all the connections computers
but more likely it is the transmission
