XJR J-gate shifter issue

Question about my '03 XJR. I've had the car a couple months now and for the first time tried to slide the shifter over from Drive to pseudo-manual and it won't slide over and out of 'D' no matter if I'm stopped or driving. Is there a trick I'm missing or do I have some linkage issues? Probably won't use the "manual" mode much, if at all, but I'm curious as to what's up.
Thanks,

It normally slides over very smooth. Here is a problem to check that I have fixed in the past on both and xjr and xkr. The dust/dirt sheild that rotates with stick (round plastic plate with plastic black toothbrush looking bristles) sometimes will crack someway or another and it jams up the manual side of the j-gate. Look down with a flash light while moving the stick (with key in ignition and car not running) and see if you can see a physical obstruction. It will look like your stick is hitting a black plate where it seems it should slide to manual mode. If that is the case, remove gear knob, remove the trim, unscrew/bolt mechanism and usually the broken guard will slide out with some tinkering and luck. From then on don't eat any everything bagels around the j-gate because there is no more protective barrier to guard falling poppy seeds
