Default XJR Oil Pump

Has anyone had to replace the oil pump in their 2001-2003 XJR? And if so why? I am told by my local Jaguar independent garage that they don't normally need maintenance or replacement. I'm concerned about the one in my car, and don't know if it is working as efficiently as it should. I know the screen is not blocked because I checked it.

Any comments?

Your indy is quite correct.

If it concerns you, you can have the oil pressure tested using a oil pressure gauge.

Oil pumps are not maintenance items and have no specific maintenance schedule.

There are 2 different oil pumps for the 4.0 engine. The later pumps have the pick-up tube mounted directly to the pump, and the early ones go through the sump plate.

Check your engine number before you order a part.

Thanks. Is one design better or more likely to provide better oil pressure? And if so, can I use either design in the my 4.0? I have low oil pressure only at stoplights when car is at operating temperature idling in Drive. Shift to N or shut off AC compressor and oil light goes off. My assumption is because I pick up an RPM or two doing this which closes the sending unit, and clears the fault.

Good question, I'm not sure if you can fit the late pump to the earlier engine...it's definitely an upgrade as it has oil jets for the primary chains - I know the gaskets are different, and block/utilize oil galleries.
It's a lot easier and cheaper to try the sensor first. Does it come on when the engine is cold, you might try going up a weight if it only does it hot. What's the idle speed?

I think the sump plate has a cutout for the pickup tube in the later engines. You might modify the plate but I don't know if it is an UPGRADE type part.

There is a TSB (100-21) with description and views of the procedure to replace the later pump. The file is over 2 MB and it will NOT upload to the thread.

You will need to find it in the 'sticky' section that I uploaded it to.
If it is not there then you might contact a moderator to find it in the LARGE FILE section.

Yes, I have changed the sending unit, changed the oil to 10-40 Castrol synthetic, cleaned the oil pickup, and am running a Jaguar OEM oil filter. Other than the oil pump, I don't know what else to try. The light never comes on when the engine is cold, only when it is at normal operating temp (and presumably the oil viscosity is lower). Idle RPM is being controlled by the computer and is at normal level.
Thanks!

Motorcarman would know, but if there is easier access by dropping the pan, you might want to check the oil pressure relief valve for normal operation. You might have a condition where it is not fully closing, so at idle the volume is not sufficient to overcome the seepage.

Before tackling this, notice all the "mights" in the above
