Replaced Instruction Cluster Pack (module) with used one almost 16 months ago (plug & play). Solved P1642 DTC issue.
Replaced TPS wires with gold ones kit 17 months ago. Solved P1638 issue.

Jim,

Thanks man. That helps. It looks like all roads lead to the Instrument Cluster Module.

"Daft" question, as the Brits like to say: Is this 'module' you're referring to an actual MODULE, or do mean the instrument cluster itself?

Thanks

Here is a photo I found on Ebay:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/s6zno2o2z9...er%20photo.jpg

Look in the boot (trunk) there is a VCATS list that includes the information about the IPK:
Our 2001 XJ8 info:
The VCATS Lists the IPK as LJE4300AB/302

The Instrument Cluster Pack (IPK) that we had to replace had this label information on it:
Jan 17 2001 LJE 4300 AB s/w ver 3 64

The Ebay replacement we purchased label has it as:
April 17, 2001 LJE 4300 AB s/ w version 365

So the replacement unit from Ebay is the same part and is only one software version newer than the our existing one that went bad.

Look at my other thread for info on Instrument cluster - see post# 5:

Perfect. Thanks Jim. Again, a big help.

Without spending hundreds of dollars to get this thing diagnosed .. how likely it is that the problem DOES stem from the cluster needing to be replaced? From what I've read on the forum over the past few hours, it looks like this is a fairly common problem with a fairly common solution

Default P1642 code

Hi Dave, it seems that your problems come from the car wash; maybe you need to hand wash it now. Seriously, I would suspect water in an electrical connection, because the CAN bus connects all the modules together. It might even be something as simple as water in the wheel speed sensors, or even in the connections at the gearbox. If the car drives OK, I would take it for a 1 hour drive to dry everything out.
good luck
Pete

That's actually kind of an interesting idea Pete.. But the CEL was on before taking it through the most recent car wash where it went into RP mode. However, I have driven it for several hours since then, cleared the code and it came back. But like I said, I haven't noticed any performance issues or issues with the gauge/cluster like some had mentioned. It seems to be throwing up a code with no symptoms. Before going straight to cluster replacement, I think I'm going to drive it for a while here as the temperature warms in Southern Ontario and wait for everything to dry out, then clear the code and try again.

Unless anyone has any other suggestions..?

So get this Pete,

I leave the car outside in the sun all week because I figure 'hey, maybe I should let it get some air and sunlight; might help dry things out' - Well, I go to start it yesterday and it clears the code. You may have been right all along about water in a connection. What a weight off my chest! Now I can take the money I would've spent on a new cluster and get that cold air intake I've been looking at - Happy Easter indeed!
