XJR smoke on start up
car in question is a 02 XJR-100 with 47k on the odo. Took a 25 mile drive last night to the airport to pickup the Mrs and when I started it in the parking garage a BIG billow of smoke came out of the exhaust (grayish in appearance) this AM upon start it did the same thing. Any ideas? I really don't need this aggravation in my life right now, seems like when it rains it pours!

No oil added since last change over a month ago, runs fine after initial "fog", performance seems fine, no smoke on kick down at speed or heavy acceleration from a standing start.
I hesitated to buy this particular car as I knew it had been thrashed a bit, it's had the heads off and regasketed plus an arp stud kit.

I think the logic may have been the same as Aston Martin shortening the dipstick on the DB9. The logic being make the dipstick indicate in a way to tell you to put more oil in than the original factory spec to prevent damage from oil starvation under certain driving conditions.

so it was a riposte to that and no more than that.

My wife's '99 XJR developed smoking on initial cold startup a few years back - not a big cloud but definitely not normal for a very low mileage car - probably 20k mi. It turned out to be leaking injectors - apparently the high pressure would slowly bleed fuel into the cylinders overnight and there would be a puff of smoke on startup. I believe the dealer ran the engine on injector cleaner (not certain what they used), and the car has been fine since. Might be worth a try if the problem persists. Good luck.

The original problem that the increased oil capacity was supposed to fix, was oil starvation while cornering hard. The most common symptom of that oil starvation was spinning the front main bearing.
