What can you alter with the durametric? shift points? shift times? Or is it a reset, because a hard reboot can do this.

Sounds like you have achieved a perfect upgrade in the driving experience and improved durability.

Given that this thread may become the canonical thread for the solenoid upgrade on Jaguars running the W5A580 transmission, the major parts of the procedure are:

1. install solenoids
2. reset tcm, probably by full powertrain reset as described elsewhere since most people will not have a spare tcm
3. enjoy

The partial fluid change is kind of unavoidable unless one recycles the atf drained to drop the pan

Make sure you pay particular attention to step 3 above: "enjoy"!

I replaced the solenoids on my car a few weeks ago, what a difference. The other thing you want to change is the connector for the plug in the transmission. I purchased the pan gasket & plug from the local Mercedes dealer for $45.00. The solenoids are not cheap but make a huge difference in the shift quality. Here is a link on the installation.

I was shocked at how much cheaper the parts were from Mercedes, they are half the price I would pay as a dealer employee.

It's the same situation with Jaguar .. they source the parts from Mercedes and then apply a markup.

BTW, that car is running 9.59 @ 148

One other thing while under the car ... seal the dipstick tube at the transmission with RTV. There is a Chrysler TSB out on this because water seepage at this joint can cause slippage at concentrations as low as .05 percent. The TSB calls for the RTV and a TRIPLE flush of the ATF once water gets in.

Just bought a super cheap low miles 722.6 out of a 98' UK XJR......it's cheap because the fool that dropped it didn't take the torque converter with it......

Can anyone tell me anything about the early MB boxes compared to the later, say 01/02?
The one thing I've come across is the drain plug on the early torque converters, is there anything else, like bearing updates etc on the later boxes? I'm about to install blue top solenoids in it, then fit it to my rebuilt motor.

If any one is looking for the service manual published for the LX using this transmission, you can find it by using the search term:

+"automatic transmission nag1 - service information"

in a search engine.

Default ATF Necromancy

Not sure if this thread made it to cannon or not, but seems legit as anything I came across so apologies for the necro.

I'm looking for the latest info for my 1999 XJR. Ready to do a fluid exchange, and thought I was good to go, but the seller cancelled my order of this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/351319490140

And said I needed to order this instead: http://www.ebay.com/itm/361226082235

Any suggestions on this would be appreciated.

I already purchased the connector plug, but I would also greatly appreciate help sourcing the blue solenoids.

Thank you much!

You will find that not many members read/respond to old threads. Starting a new one will get more response. The mercedes transmission uses ATF 123. If you don't have a dipstick kit, you will need that, also.

Default Valvoline Maxlife Dex/Merc

For what it's worth, I put Valvoline Maxlife Dex/Merc in my 98 XJR transmission about 45,000 Km ago. No issues to report. I also called Valvoline prior to using it and they assured me it was a good choice. I bought it at Walmart.

I mention this because it seems some members are struggling to find transmission fluid for the Mercedes units in XJRs.

Other members may shudder to think of using oil purchased at Walmart, but I have been quite pleased with how it performs. 45,000 K may not be a torture test, but no signs of concern have been detected.

I want to get closest to stock atf as possible since I'm not doing a full flush. Just a drain and fill. Don't like the idea of mixing different fluids,... I thought I read the original spec was 236.10.

What's my best bet considering the above?

Default Give up

Think I'll just go with some Fibi Bilstein 236.10 Spec.

Thanks.
