I'm sorry.....no, they are totally different gearboxes.
The XJR uses a Mercedes sourced box and the NAS XJ8 uses a ZF 5HP24 box which has no dipstick facilities....the manufacturers tell you "It's sealed for life"....yeah right!

All this talk of a dipstick "tube" without a dipstick? Does my 2004 XJR have a "tube" somewhere in the engine compartment?

I'm not considering fluid for preventive maintenance, but because I have TWO issues I'm concerned about:

1 - the transmission makes an "URRRPP" noise when I'm going about 50mph and floor it. To me, ($.02) it sounds like a dry clutch noise.

2 - when the trans is warm and I come to a stop, or go from reverse to forwars - it seems to hit nuetral for a split second... much like an old american car that is low on fluid.

Does anyone have any ideas if changing/filling fluid will help these issues? If not - what??

Thanks - in advance.

Hi Charlie yours is a different ZF transmission that's making the infamous 'ZF Chirp', have a search in either the X350 or XK8/R subforums, to cure it's basically a trans control unit re-flash at the dealers, a painless issue.

Hope that helps.

Service complete. Replaced pan gasket and torqued everything. Ended up using my eBay dipstick marked off at 27 5/8" checked in drive after a big ole heat cycle. Used fluid from my local European Car Service station (Fuchs Titan fluid meeting 236.12 spec) also was able to get the new bushing for the wiring harness from him as well. All in all simple except for the fluid measurement but trans is operating flawlessly, bit of a hard downshift to first gear in sport mode but it used to do that before the service. Also did engine oil pan at the same time (had a hole in it from the previous owner) replacement from Jag was a mere $105 including gasket and new plug. Jag oil filter and Valvoline synthetic oil. Great couple days of Jag wrenching.
