Default XJR (X308) Factory Chrome Wheels - Asteroid

Hi, The seven spoke (“Asteroid”) wheels commonly found on the 2000 – 2003 XJRs came in different factory finishes, including chrome. Is there an easy (or good) way to distinguish “Factory” chrome Asteroids from those that have been chrome finished after-market? Thank you, Al (Mr. Alan Wrench)

Not true, the Asteroid came from the factory in only 1 finish; silver paint
The key words here is "from the factory"
Dealers, especially in the US, had them chromed on request

Very interesting, luc. There's also a third finish, namely polished aluminum with clearcoat, which seems to be the most common of the three in my experience -- perhaps dealers got a lot of requests from customers for that finish!

(Appearance (finish or style) of the wheels aside) from a functional standpoint, how can you know the wheels are straight and otherwise fully functional when buying used wheels. Industrial processes for checking metal components, e.g., gas turbine engine parts, use 3-D laser scanning, etc., but short of that type of inspection, is there a practical way to make sure you’re buying wheels that are “good”?

Taking them to a tire shop to have them checked on the balancing machine might be the simplest if you're dealing with a local seller.

Thanks for the reply from Benny. BTW, nice tatt -- the colors aren't showing very well on my screen -- is there any green or red in it?

You're welcome, and thank you - there's no color, it's all black and shading. The artist did it using an XJS wheel center cap for reference.
