Default xjr x308 trans fluid....??

Hi guys, I'm replacing the seals on the multi plug connector on the auto box due to them leaking........this is where it gets difficult!....... ive just called three main dealers to find out what fluid to use as I know this being the merc box its vital you use the correct stuff.........frighteningly one dealer said to just use dextron 2......which would kill the box in under a thousand miles, another said that they list an old part number for it (jml20292), but don't stock it any more and the third said they would just put in what ever was available at the time!!!!!!!..........and these are main dealers!!!!.......
Does anyone know the correct fluid number?....I think its made by Mobil if that helps........
Thanks.

I had mine replaced at the local mercedes dealer. They called the local jag dealer and were told that they couldn't get any fluid and that you shouldn't replace it anyways unless you're rebuilding the transmission. That's whey I reminded the service advisor that was why I took it to the mercedes dealer so thy could put their fluid in it. $210 later I was fresh and good to go and didn't have to find a dipstick.

Or get the fluid from a Mercedes dealer (see the part number in the ebay listing)...it will be a fraction of the cost of the Jag dealer anyway.

The ebay listing was only for 2 bottles and the Mercedes price not that much more expensive last I had checked.

When I did mine I got everything at the local Mercedes dealer. When I described the problem they new EXACTLY what I was talking about and the guy at the counter went to a pile of the connectors right at the front. Guess it really is a common problem

If I remember correctly, the connector was something like $21 and the fluid was like $16 a quart. Unless you plan on changing your fluid, you'll only need 1 or maybe 2 quarts, as you don't lose a whole lot. Just tell them you have a 722.6 transmission and they'll get you the right fluid. DO NOT USE FLUID FOR THE CHRYSLER NAG1. Although they are technically the same transmission, MB made a lot of changes in the 10 years between our cars and the Chryslers, and the fluid is slightly different. Ours work best with fluids made to the MB 236.10 spec. 236.12 and 236.14 spec fluids work fine, just not QUITE as well as 236.10 fluid.

Just a note, this is not fun if you leave the X-pipe in place. It can be done (I did it with the exhaust in place), but space is VERY tight. There is a heat shield you'll have to remove that guards the catalytic converter on that side. Make sure the engine is dead cold before you go poking around in here, I burned my hand a little on the cat after letting it cool for an hour. Make sure you spray out the male side of the connector with electronics cleaner (or just brake cleaner if you have something to flush it out with afterwards). The connector will be full of fluid and if any remains it can still mess with things. Also, let the connector hang down for a while. It wicks a surprising amount of fluid up the harness, and you can let some of that drain out.

I lucked out that a family member works in vehicle maintenance for a fleet that uses Mercedes Sprinters with the same transmission, so I borrowed his dipstick. you should be able to find the service dipstick at a Freightliner service center, as they marketed Sprinters as Freightliners for a while. I think they're like $50-$60. Also, you can get one from Eurotoys.

Good luck!

$16 is probably right around the price of a gallon jug of Valvoline Dex/Merc Maxlife which will work just fine on the Merc transmission.

Did you get the MB connector? Don't use the aftermarket.

Unfortunately, as mentioned the 10 spec fluid is no more from MB -- Autohaus sells the Fuchs 10 spec -- you should be able to get it in the UK from someone

Autohaus gets a bit over $13 for it. I used this last time.
